    Default 6-button controller size

Huh, it never occured to me beforehand that the 6-button controller size was different depending on the region (I was aware of the Start button color being different, but never noticed the size was different too).

I don't understand what you're referring to. That picture is of the standard size 6 button controller. It was sold everywhere as a separate peripheral. Maybe you're confusing it with the smaller Model 3 Genesis controller, which came bundled with it.

    Standard Genesis 6 button controller:

Model 3 Genesis 6 button controller (my favorite, imo):

Notice the placement of the mode button on the front.

I think the size is only different with the JP controller:

It is smaller and has a blue button, while the EU controller is bigger with a red button and the US of the same size as the EU one but with a grey button.

Just gonna link straight to the relevant pic to avoid further confusion (because Twitter keeps making it harder to figure out what's relevant):

And the model 3 controller is easy to tell apart, it's hard to miss that normal/turbo/slow switch =P

Man can't believe they made that thing any smaller. It's my favorite controller ever, like the Saturn one but feels more solid, but it's just a bit to small.

I don't know which size of 6-button PAL got, but it's definitely smaller than the 3-button, and I don't like it. 3-button size is much more comfortable.

I got one of those JP-style pads in a Genesis lot. I think they actually released it in the US with a cute name for small-handed people.

It's a great pad despite the size. Actually, the button response seems a little bit snappier than it is on the larger one, but maybe it's just because mine is less worn.

I have one of those too. Didn't know it was Japanese. Same size as Model 3

Asians tend to have smaller bodies overall, so it makes sense to make the controllers smaller for their hands accordingly. Although note it seems to be just the sides (i.e. what you use as grip), the D-pad and buttons still have the same size.

The jap one is to small and the cord is tiny. The blue start button is nice so I took it out and put it in an American 6 button pad
Beat Em Up- Streets of Rage 2
    Platformer- Sonic 3 and Knuckles
    Run and Gun- Gunstar Heroes
    Adventure- Story of Thor
    Action- Shinobi 3

I have always preferred the size of the 3 button controller over the smaller 6 button pads.

I felt that way for years, until I started playing with the 6-button pad. Ain't no going back, baby!

Must be the kind of feeling NES fanboys get when they switch to the dog bone.

I agree with that, but still prefer using the 6 button overall. A 6 button redesign of the 3 button would have been perfect(aside from the few 'net nerds that would still bitch about it being too large).
