Talking R-TYPE anime short - Paul Johnson work in progress

Irem's classic shooter R-Type is becoming an anime short. Check out the stunning work-in-progress video here...

Well, this is fabulous. If you're old enough to remember Irem's classic 1987 shooter R-Type, you'll probably also recall that it had some of the coolest monster and ship designs of its era. The huge, Giger-esque beasts that greated the player at the end of levels one and two are difficult to shake. And then there was stage three, which was basically one huge boss battle.

Anyway, animator Paul Johnson clearly has a lingering affection for R-Type, since he's making a stunning anime-style tribute to Irem's most famous shooter. You might also recall that Johnson was also behind the magnificent Star Wars anime, which he uploaded last year.

Johnson calls the below a work in progress. If this is the case, we really can't wait to see what the finished film looks like.

Just, wow. I'm very impressed. Looking forward to the completed work.

Wow. So this looks so awesome. Really wish Irem was still around and pushing this imagery and lore further with more releases in all kinds of genres and anime movies.

So yeah, so nice to see the Bydo live again!

PS - sorry I can't rep you, OP.

    Looks amazing.

The only thing i didn't like was the pilot wearing his everyday, casual clothes while piloting the ship. I'd prefer a proper suit to make it feel more professional/official, instead of someone taking the ship for a spin like it's a bike.

Definitely has a late 80s look and it's great IMHO.

I wish there wasn't any voice acting... it really didn't even need it.

I saw it without sound (broken speaker) and it's pure awesomeness.

I can nitpick on some animations (it's easy to see that eyes, face, lips are graphical objects moved independantly, but that's already 10x better than most 80s animes), but the global result is just wow. I particularly like how all the elements of the backgrounds of level 1 were used, and are faithfull I want level 2 !!!

Yeah, it was a great animation.
Awesome to see a legendary shooter getting this kind of treatment; looking forward to the next stages.

Also, there was a Golden Axe cabinet far on the back of that Arcade...maybe on a next time?
