Has anyone here played the Lost Planet games? I'm surprised they made three of them in the main series. There are some merits to it, like the storyline and explosions--which, however dumb it sounds, are fun to watch, bug guts spewing everywhere, big machine guns, etc.
However, the game itself is terribly clunky, stuffy, and dull. I really want to like it, and have been trying to get into the first one, but the first boss battle is so fucking laughable because of how terrible the controls are and how slow and lopsided the character is. Even when you have the armor suit, a pathetic attempt to make the game seem badass, it's still very unpleasant.
There is one redeeming LP-related title that is worth playing. Ex-Troopers, an import-only title for PS3 and 3DS. I have it for the former (it can be had dirt cheap right now, too). It was more light hearted and humorous, had a charming cast, and much more charisma/personality than the LP games have. It keeps what is good about LP but makes it more bearable. The leveling up/material system is better. Remember, this is Capcom we're talking about, who also did Monster Hunter. But even people like myself who are partial to MH will find it very accessible. It's easy to figure out without much knowledge of Japanese, as there is a supportive community of importers helping with it on GameFAQs. I also like the rank system for the VR missions, having to finish each mission under certain criteria to achieve medals and unlock new weapons or items. Such a shame that they never released it over here. Glad to have imported a copy though before it gets expensive.
My impression of LP in general though is that the main series is another symptom of Japanese developers trying to appeal to 'western' sensibilities. Even though I respected Keiji Inafune's work with Mega Man (he did create this series too, btw) I am appalled whenever I hear him or idiots like Inagaki saying "Western developers are more creative", and making boring, generic Hollywood drivel. That's not to say I dislike all western games: Starcraft is certainly a better sci-fi franchise than most of what's out today, but too smart for most modern players.
Let me know what you think of the series.
