Splatterhouse 2 & 3 (Especially the 2nd game gives me the creeps)
Dino Crisis (fuck you, being chased by a T-Rex is horrifying!)
Resident Evil 2 & 3 (Love that Dawn of the Dead feel it has)
    Clock Tower (so fucking creepy)

However, that is all run through my Alien franchise positive bias filter. So, maybe it really is poorly paced and boring.
i do so love that franchise, just need to give the game another shake...maybe this fall! everything about what you guys are saying sounds right up my alley

If you aren't willing to break the bank for the European copy, from what I've gathered is that the Japanese game's dialogue is entirely in English however the options, items, descriptions are in Japanese. For the most part I've heard the game is very playable which is why I'm curious enough to give it a try!

System Shock 2. I like System Shock 1 a bit more but it only borderline counts as horror.

    Parasite Eve

Resident Evil, 2, 3, Code: Veronica
    Snatcher
    Splatterhouse 3

Games as a child that terrified me but today can now play by myself :

    Castlevania series (especially Bloodlines!)
    Doom
    Ecco the Dolphin

Games I think that are scary but want to play:

    Dark Arms: Beast Buster
    Deep Fear
    Vice: Project Doom

Games that I think are terrifying and will never, ever play:

    Clock Tower
    Silent Hill series
What...? You must live a very sheltered life. Ecco the Dolphin???

Haha, well, maybe it's just me but the entirety of Ecco the Dolphin on the Genesis was in my five-year-old mind the pinnacle of frightening. The challenge of being submerged underwater while maze-finding, the music was utterly haunting, and the moment you finally grasp the alien-invasion story! Oh man, Ecco was paranoia electronically incarnate!

I do however own the CD version and the soundtrack alone (of course is so spectacular) transforms the overall tone of the game's ambiguous atmosphere into something more serene rather than creepy. That's my take anyways.

So I really enjoy Ecco CD, but the Genesis version? No thanks Sega...

I wouldn't call Ecco horror, but it certainly has a very creepy vibe going on in a couple places.

Mostly stuff like hitting the right key glyphs in a certain order and/or finding trapped dolphins and guiding them out of mazes and the occasional solo maze where you just gotta find the exit.

The idea behind it is very simple, but its very easy to get lost. for a better experience (back then at least) one would have to make crude maps of the level you were playing.

I always really liked Ecco, but unless you used the infinite air cheat an annoying maze could easily become a hair puller.

Action Henk comes off as one of the most horrifying games I have ever seen.

    Also, the Genesis Jurassic Park.
    I demand a Blaze spinoff!

Putting in another vote for System Shock 2

While Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3 really got me to jump a few times and had some moody bits, I was never more on edge than when I was playing SS2.
Really looking forward to the System Shock 1 remake and to finally get a System Shock 3.

Can't wait to see in what direction this series goes.

The first game that genuinely got under my skin was the original Resident Evil. The moment you realised just how fucked up and horrific the Umbrella Corporation's genetic experiments were and everything that led up to the part where you discovered the ultimate abomination in bio organic weaponry, the Tyrant...(shudder)

The scariest game of all time for me so far though is Creative Assembly's masterpiece in survival horror, Alien:Isolation. Not only one of the best movie-tie-in licensed games ever made but also the shit-yer-pants scariest! It's everything that the crushing disappointment that was Aliens:Colonial Marines could, and indeed should, have been.
