YouTube How to make a COOL gaming room for CHEAP

    Hi

I just made a new video to share some ideas and tips to make a cool gaming room without spending too much money.

This is filmed badly on purpose as this is the theme of the video: Cheap! I put out some jokes here and there but please forgive my english!

What i show in this video is in no way the best setup one could have, far from it! But still it looks good and it works. So watch it, try not to be offended by the shocking images you'll see!

    Happy watching!

I really like how you display your NES games, lovely. I also like the side by side layout; I'm going for this setup when I have the room. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for watching! Yeah i really like that i can see the whole cartridge when looking for a game. You have to have enough wall space though and sometimes it can be hard to have as much wall space with nothing in the way. I'm in a house so i could dedicate a room for gaming, when i was in an appartement before i sure could'nt do this!

ah man, apartment life is less conducive of wall shelves, so it's all ikea bookshelves for me at the moment...but it's a cool video, and i liked the art you had up! good selection of games up there, seeing Shining Force & Final Fantasy together was neat

Don't even deal with ikea, just go to fleamarket or CL. One 2m high and 1m wide cost me $15 for 2 of them.
This is your money, give me a smoking.

I agree, Ikea can be quite expensive if you let it.

Also @ OP: Kudos on the notion of keeping your carts within view and ease of reach. For me, it is the number one reason to put your games up on shelves rather than hidden from view in a cab or something. Can't wait to watch the video when I get back from work. More comments to come.

@Griska: Yes that is a good idea also, looking at flea markets. Most of the time i go there for games but i end up buying some other things that do no have anything to do with gaming! Furniture for cheap? Why not!

@QuickSciFi: When picking a game, i want it to like going at a movie rental store. You just pick one up from the shelf, look at the label... I never rented a movie i picked up in a box lying in the closet!

Ikea shelves are not too expensive but they are not deep enough to put all your consoles on. Taking in account the wires sticking out from the back of the console. They look good though, they give a modern look but en up costing to much if you want to have a lot of shelf space. So better to build your own or to buy something used.

Also just a question for you guys: I am fairly new to the whole Youtube video making hobby, just to let you know my native language is french. So to help me get better, tell me honestly:

    - How was the humor?
    - How was the filming quality? (i know it is shaky)
    - How was my english in the V-O parts?
    - Were the gaming porn jokes too much?

    Thanks for your feedback!

See I'm against the whole game room. I'm not trying to impress or brag about my collection which I think is the main purpose when displaying or having a game room over convenience. I don't need to spend tons of money on shelving and furniture just to have easier access to see the end labels. My collection is probably bigger then lots of people who display them but it's hidden in my bat cave. So when guests come over I don't look like the guy from 40 year old virgin where his social life is his hobby.

I have always thought about displaying my collection but then I revert back to what I previously said. What's matters to me is that the game is there if I want to play. Presentation isn't so important.

You know I never understand when people say "I don't like the idea of a game room".

Is this because for most people the game room would be their living room? it was always my assumption that a game room was a separate room.
but just dedicated to your gaming hobby, I mean if you look at AVGN he has a gaming basement room. so its not his living room.

And does this mean that in America visitors are allowed to roam the house of someone they visit? why would they think bad of someone
when they aren't even allowed to roam the house and find the gaming room?

So what's the difference between someone having a room dedicated to his hobby and someone having his "batcave"?

does batcave mean basement? so a basement is less weird then a room? some people don't have basements.

I just don't get the hate, you gotta store your shit somewhere!

Store it in the basement : cool batcave, not 40 year old virgin at all!

Store it in the attic : cool supermancave, not 40 year old virgin at all!

Store it in your bedroom : its okay cause you're only 21 and still living at home, retro is kewl and shit.

Store it in its own room : gamerooms are so shitty, just made to show off!

    'Just watched the video. Subbed!

Love the setup. I noticed we have a lot in common with our choice of materials. Lots pinewood in my room as well. My motto has always been the same: "build it simple, stupid!" . I used the same shelving setup from Home Depot for my "Sega Wall" on my game room; but I have to admit, it is the most expensive setup I've ever built (close to $600). If you want a sturdy setup like I do, the screws will be almost half the price.

The video could also double as "game room management". You hit many great points.

I think that I only spent a few thousand on my room, since we just bought a new house, will be here for close to 20 years and I'm downsizing from 3 rooms (arcade, game & art) to one. It really isn't a lot of money, even if you're a game player and not a collectard. If you have hundreds of games and lots of consoles and misc, to the point that you need a bunch of shelving, then it's a drop in the bucket. I fill my shelves with games to keep them accessible. The ones that collectards pay hundreds or thousands for are mixed in with the rest with only spines visible. It's not about showing off, it's about functionality.

while i totally have blue sega shelves to show off my shit, it's first & foremost setup for accessibility. i have my shit in such an order that i can easily find things when stupid-drunk, and that's what matters in life.

literally cannot imagine spending an iota of my finite life concerned with what others think, certainly not fearful of those i get close enough to to bring back to my abode...if they're that turned off by a well-kept corner for a hobby i love, hey, we prolly weren't gonna get along anyway

@needler420: That is just fine by me, you really don't need to display all your stuff, i don't need to either. If you want to keep your games in boxes that is as good as me wanting to display them on shelves. Sure there is some bragging involved i won't lie but who does not like talking/showing what he likes? But as it has been said before in previous posts, it's also a lot for convenience, organizing a collection. Pretty much the same as keeping a living room organized, dvds in one shelve, cable box in another place...etc.

@QuickSciFi: Thanks! Really happy you liked it! Yeah even though my video is aiming for a cheap game room, it's not as cheap as possible. One could make shelves for way less money but i happen to like pinewood, the natural look it gives, i would have preferred hardwood like oak or walnut but did i say i was looking for something cheap? So what i did may not be really really cheap but it's easiely affordable at least.

@Black_Tiger: Also agree there, even though i put Earthbound on a wall shelf i call my snes hall of fame, i don't put my most expensive games up there, i don't wanna do that, that would really be showing off in the most materialistic way. It's the game i love the most. Hey Lagoon is on that shelf and Lemmings also!

@IrishNinja: Yeah anyway only close enough people i allow to go in that room, i mean it really look stupid if we invited anybody that comes over to see that room. And i don't care if people see me as childish for having so many old video games, i love it and that's what counts.

    Thanks for all your comments!
