I feel like i'm making a right mess of playing the game so it gives me a good slap to a section where I literally need to press nothing to punish me for my awful playing, which again is because the controls are so slippery and all over the place that I can't get any bearings to begin with.

It's far better than the mess that was 06 and Unleashed, but not by a whole lot. Sonic has never really worked 100% in 3D, even from Sonic 3D Blast
Unleashed isn't even that bad of a game.

Slippery controls on a 3D Sonic, eh? Nothing of the sort while playing 2D Sonic... or 2D Mario.

When I read your post earlier today, I found myself nodding in agreement. Reading some of the comments thus far, I hope they don't bother releasing a Sonic Mania 2 for quite a long time. Only then will people appreciate the titles released thus far.

Amusingly, a lot of that is actually in the level data and can be changed by editing some files (e.g. how springs remove control for you for a while, unlike what happens in the Mega Drive games). People have done that in the PC version if I recall correctly.

It's a strange little divide in the consoles fan base.

That said, I couldn't begin to tell what's wrong with an individual that can outgrow Sonic, yet somehow not Mario....

Yeah same with that guy from Forsyard. Love the guy, but says he could never get into Sonic thanks to already experiencing games like Mickey Mouse prior. Same thing with Joe, loves the Mickey Mouse game but lukewarm on Sonic. Meanwhile late adopters like myself (Genesis 2 with Sonic 2 bundle) are opposite.

Though these days I found more appreciation and magic in first gen games, there's just something really special about these games, I still really dislike that Mickey Mouse game. Don't get what all the hub bub is all about with that one, just an inferior Mario clone like seemingly all other hop n bop games.

I don't think Unleashed is anywhere as bad as some people make it out to be (Gogogadget). However, it does have some faults. Unlike most people, I find the Night stages enjoyable. The day stages I thought were the worst part of the game. That last world was just a bad idea. Losing your score if you die in an act was one of the dumbest things to have in a game. If I were to rate it, I'd give it a 6 out of 10. It's playable and not a huge mess. You want a mess, Sonic 2 on the Game Gear.

I wouldn't wish for Sonic Mania 2 to be released after many years, though I wouldn't want it to be released too soon or do what Nintendo did with New Super Mario Bros.

Unleashed is dog shit awful. 1/10.

It's a poor mans God of War at best, and God of War is already a fantastic franchise, plus you have to hunt around for stupid coins just to play the bastard game. It's probably one of my top 10 worst games ever made.

i think god of war is generally boring as balls, but didn't mind those sections breaking up unleashed as much as the aforementioned hunt for stupid coins to let me play another level, i always hate that gimmick

I always thought that was an example of "I was into it before it was cool." Except the Revenge of Shinobi > Shinobi III thing, that's totally true.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

god of war does look boring as balls. Though I never played it, only seen a friend play it for a bit and had to do those quick time simon says button press events for him because he's a casual who always turns all games to easiest difficulty.

Speaking of difficulty, what you all think of Sonic Mania difficulty? I'm actually not sure, as I'm somewhat familiar with the Sonic games.

LOL you guys actually like Sonic? Can you tell me what you like about him and his games? Not compared to other games... just what makes his games great to you? I'd really be interested in reading that.

    Reasonable.

Not too frustratingly difficult, not a cakewalk. Fine by me.

This is a very good observation. And am part of the former. My appreciation for the Sonic games only grew after reading everyone's comments here about what makes the games great. Who said you can't teach an old dog new tricks! Arffff!
