A lot of people don't like Sonic Unleashed, me included. If you can't handle that then that's your issue. The daytime levels were ok, however the night time levels played like a kids version God of War game that was slow and monotonous and the travel sections where you had to shoot down the missiles with the correct button press were frustrating and stupid too. I disliked the game so much I gave away my copy for free to a family friend. The only 3D Sonic games that I've gotten enjoyment out of are Colors and Generations, but neither are as good as the original games.
Depends on what version of Unleashed we're talking 'bout. I thought the PS2/Wii version was pretty decent with some good day (Sonic) stages, and the Werehog levels being kinda ok. PS360 Unleashed? Turned that shit off on the first few levels. QTE fest. Horrid flight stage with terrible QTE. Fuck that version of the game.

I played through PS3 Unleashed. Gameplay was ok, music was great, and story was interesting. However, the PS3 simply couldn't handle it. The entire game looked fantastic and QTEs are ok but when the PS3 drops inputs because there's too much going on and you fall to your death repeatedly...

Yeah I had the 360 version and it was the flight stage that really made the game unplayable. I tried several times to play it and each time got to the point that I wanted to hurl the controller at the screen. Thanks for the info on the PS2/Wii version of the game, I might have to check that version out instead.

Nah the 360 version is awful also. You repeatedly fall to your death in that game also. I pulled the disc out and dumped the game at the back of my game cabinet, until a family friend mentioned that they liked Sonic games, I handed it over to him to play instead ..lol

Oh, did I say remove rings from a Sonic game to make room for removing knockbacks? Sorry, that would mean having to slow the game's break neck speeds to fat plumber mach 2. Congratulations Sonic haters, you've succeeded in creating the perfect Sonic game, "Super Mario Brothers, woo hoo!"

Yeah, I primarily played it on the Wii and I thought Unleashed was okay. I always think people are exaggerating about it because people just like to exaggerate how bad Sonic games are. (I am also of the opinion that Sonic and the Secret Rings was Not Bad.) But I guess most people played the ps3/360 version.

Why bother with health systems and not just make the character an one-hit wonder then?

And lets not forget now having the ability to dmg boost/i-frame boost past difficult sections, meaning ring re-grab will for sure have to be removed or Sonic can blow through all enemies and stage hazards in infinite i-frame mode.
You can still abuse regrabing rings all the time even with knockback. Actually that has been something that got criticized about Sonic that made it too easy, in most games getting hit a bunch of times (especially during a boss fight) is pretty much a guaranteed death, in Sonic you can keep going on as long as you keep grabbing back that one ring.

For the record, Sonic Robo Blast 2 (a fangame) tries to work around that by not resetting the timer for ring flashing until you grab a fresh one. This means that eventually the ring you keep regrabbing will flash away if you never manage to collect new ones from the stage.

Nah, PS3 isn't to fault this time around. The 360 version also plays like dogshit with severe input lag problems.

Also those kinds of games that are just cheap instadeath games where enemies repeatedly knock you into a pit? Yeah those can fuck off too. Rayman 1 especially.

Because either everyone will then call Castlevania too hard and it already has that label to begin with. Or the game would have to be redesigned extensively to being a one hit wonder, changing the game too much in the process from what we know it - could be an entirely different game.

Yes, but the knockback prevents it from being too cheap and unusable of a technique.

Speaking of rings, rings in Sonic Mania never seem to disappear on screen like before.

Behold, in the first few seconds, disappearing rings. They fade out, rather than just blinking out of existence.

No, it's unbiased analysis. The only fanboyism is people who claim that Hyperstone Heist and Bloodlines are actually as good as their SNES counterparts.

Yeah, why would anyone want be cool, super fast and full of attitude when you can be slow, fat and high on shrooms.

Don't care what anyone says, the first Sonic was lightning in a bottle of gameplay design in everything perfectly complimenting each other so well (a perfect loop of speed>rings>knockbacks). Now I think about it, even adding something like the spin dash may have thrown a small wrench into otherwise perfect formula. Not sure, will have to keep in mind next time I replay games, but from a level design perspective devs had more control at predicting/controlling player action with speeds being momentum based VS payers always being able to spin dash to full speeds in ball form. Not to mention loss of control when in spin dash travel mode. So curious to pay more attention on to how devs worked around that? I can already see some thought put into enemies with spin dash in mind with those light bugs in that vine stage, the only enemy in casino night or the roosters in the flying fortress. For stage design, well, casino night comes to mind right away.
