Default Videogame music that borrowed its soundtrack from other sources.

I don't know if this has been covered before, but there were several games that had theme music that I very much thought borrowed from other artists. I know the whole Sonic thing, with music that sounded like it was inspired by Michael Jackson, but one particular music source, the Top Gun movie soundtrack, seemed to have a lot of influence on videogame soundtracks. Here are a couple of examples that I can think of.

The Amiga air combat game F/A-18's opening theme song sounded very similar to that of the opening theme to the movie.

Ken's theme song from Street Fighter 2, sounded very similar to the opening sequence from Cheap Trick's Mighty Wings from Top Gun. I have the feeling that this was originally planned as the song for Guile, since he was a pilot.

Can you think of any other videogame songs that also do this sort of thing?

A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

No list like this is complete without Doom.

One of my favourite examples of borrowed music is the intro to Codename Droid, given the fact that Airwolf was still popular when the game was released I'd love to know how they got away with it. Music starts at 00:15 here:

I was going to mention Doom, but I'm glad Blades beat me to it because until now the only tune I was aware of Doom borrowing was Them Bones by Alice in Chains. I think id Software actually admitted to the inspiration of that song too.

I feel like Ristar borrows from Steve Miller's Swingtown.

This is your money, give me a smoking.

The story goes that John Romero gave Robert Prince a stack of metal records and said something like "make the music sound like this," and Prince was very inspired by those records, but legally didn't copy them.

^As long as we're not calling Ice Cap plagiarization, since the album never released, and the bands keyboard/synthesize player was the main composer for the game.

I always thought the Final Fantasy Prelude song always sounded like the intro(the first 11 seconds) to Peter Townsends Let My Love Open the Door.

Robo from Chrono Trigger literally Rick Rolls you with his theme.

The arcade version of Ninja Gaiden uses Sabbath's Iron Man for the 2nd boss BGM, so much that it was removed for the Wii VC release.

Maximum Carnage has a straight up rip of Sabbath's Mob Rules.

Contra: Shattered Soldier has one track that could pass as Rob Zombie's Demonoid Phenomena twin brother.

It's a pretty big one and not 100% video game related, but it does cover a few of the games, so this:

The Dragon Ball Z music composer Kenji Yamamoto stole a lot of his compositions direct from other songs. Pretty much all of his music was plagiarized from others' songs, from the show and the video games. Nearly 20 years he was doing this. He only got caught when people noticed his BGM for the remastered version of DBZ sounded too much like a certain Terminator Salvation track.
Here's a comparison of one of his tracks, "The Challengers", from the 2002 video game Dragon Ball Z: Budokai, to the song he got "inspiration" from:

    DBZ Budokai - "The Challengers

Stratovarius - Hunting High And Low

Source and a more detailed look at the scandal can be found here, along with other comparisons: http://www.kanzenshuu.com/features/k...retrospective/

I was listening to the Shadow of the Beast 2 "Game Over" theme on the car this morning. Funny you started a thread about this:

I can think of 3 game songs that borrowed music from Scritti Politti

First is the Magical Moon from McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure

Second, this track from Double Dribble

And third, the Credits from Lethal Enforcers - honestly, this is just a guess.

And speaking of Doom and Faltermeyer, I can picture myself shooting demons to this
