Default Anyone open sealed Genesis games?

For the last while I've been working on a spreadsheet listing the CIB contents of Sega Genesis games (and the variant releases for each title). The contents for some titles fall into certain patterns based on publisher and I've pieced quite a bit together with help on SegaAge and through monitoring eBay.

That said, the most reliable way to verify a game's contents is through opening sealed games.

Any game titles (and contents) hightlighted in blue have been verified from opening a sealed game:
    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...UYY/edit#gid=0

I've opened a decent number of games to add to the spreadsheet and tonight I went ahead and opened Onslaught:

Anyone else here opened any Genesis releases that they might be able to contribute?
Before and after pics are best, but if its a game you've opened recently yourself, after pics only are good too!

This thread on SegaAge shows the titles that members there have opened:

I hate how people buy sealed games and don't open them, although I also hate how so many people threw away the box and manual back in the day as well.

I have a few I recently opened. I don't throw anything away. But just FYI, not all sealed Genesis games will necessarily have the same contents.

I would. If I'm buying a game, I want to play it, not have a shelf decoration.

I don't own any sealed games, every game I've bought has been a game that I want to play. I did recently open a sealed copy of Nuclear Strike for PS1 though.

I've noticed that I've never met someone that likes sealed items, and there's usually hate for the idea of owning a sealed collection of anything, yet sealed stuff (be it games, toys, models, electronics or whatever) is always the most valuable. So clearly someone likes sealed stuff and is willing to pay much more for it.

In terms of retro games, I personally prefer to buy opened games. Sealed games are like a Copenhagen/Schrodinger box paradox. If you want 100% complete certainty of the contents and the quality of the contents, I'd rather see a photo verifying each item.

I don't tend to open sealed games, but I also don't tend to buy sealed games. I think there's something beautiful about a pristine, unopened copy of a game that isn't being made anymore, but it's also useless decoration to me because I can't play it. I'm not gonna pay sealed-game-prices for decoration, and if I'm gonna play them I'd rather buy used and save money.

I opened a copy of ESWAT recently. The shrinkwrap was torn and it was being sold for the price of a loose cart, so I bought it and opened it. Gotta be honest, that 90's new-game-smell really took me back...

What makes you say that? I've always observed consistent contents from games of the same title from the same print run. A Konami Classics release will have different contents from the original Konami release of the same game, but every Konami Classics release of the same title will be the same. Some print runs are extremely hard to track (like for Sonic the Hedgehog or Ms. Pac-Man) but many releases just had one maybe two print runs where the location of manufacture shifted or the game got a budget release.

What are the titles you've opened? Any pictures you might be able to share or contributions for the spreadsheet?

The only possible inconsistencies I've observed have been with some early Electronic Arts releases, but what I've observed has been from opened contents only, so its easy to see how things could get mixed up as owners/collectors/sellers swap things. I haven't seen conflicting contents from two copies of the same game from the same print run.

On the broader topic of buying sealed games, at some point I started picking them up because they were the same price as a CIB copy, but I knew I'd be getting all of the contents. For some games registration cards can be a real bitch to find, but getting it sealed guarantees it will be there (especially in cases where I open those games, haha). I had a real beat up copy of Toys that I opened up, at which point I discovered it had its own unique reg card. Would have been pretty tough to find that just as a CIB, and the new copy was maybe only $5, so well worth it! If I've got a sealed game that I know I'll want to play, I usually keep a CIB copy around, or even just a cart-only, so its always an option to fire up that particular title.

I'm not a big nut on keeping things under wraps, but I have one or two. I opened a sealed copy of Galaxy Force for the Saturn because I wanted the full quality audio for the image I was constructing.

I have come across most of the Genesis games in the library. I know I have seen inconsistencies, but right now I can't remember which games specifically. One comes to mind in particular: Strider Returns. The game had the same exact print run, but a good percentage of them went out as re-labeled MD carts. You cannot possibly tell from the box unless you opened it. I own both with the registration cards. The manuals are also different on the cover (the difference is in the title: with the addition of "Strider II" on the recycled MD copies).

Let me know how I can help. Maybe post pics of the ones I recently opened on Imgur or something. Although I don't collect sealed games, I don't open them unless I'm ready to play them. I'm pretty sure more than 90% of my games come with all the original contents, but I don't consider that stuff when I want to put them on my collection. All I care for is Game + Box + Manual. All the other stuff is just a neat piece of history to me. I keep them if they come with it. Also, when sorting through an auction, seeing these extra items tells me that the owner went at least one step further in taking care of his/her game. I tend to open a lot of cardboard boxed games. Also opened the Realtec games (there's another difference in the contents. Funny World and Balloon Boy will have differences in the cartridges. One has a back label and the other one doesn't. I also own both recently opened).

Sealed games are the most valuable because it's something you can't undo (at least staying with the original material), once you opened the wrap, it's done for. It's not like an used CIB where if you keep the box and such in good condition you can just put everything back, and the more games are opened, the rarer the sealed games become.

So basically they're expensive entirely because of rarity factor.

Six months ago I unwrapped new copies of World Series Baseball '95, NHL All-Star Hockey '95 and Sub-Terrania all from the same eBay seller priced $5.99 each. So this thread is a little to late.

Edit: Mrwoodchuck I guess I will post photos here soon.

Edit2: A day late a dollar short... no point adding my photos now oh well but in case want to know NHL All-Star Hockey '95 came with exactly what NFL '95 has in the photos below.

Like I mentioned before, I know 100% for certain of the completeness of about 90% of my games. But I will keep true to your quest by mentioning the most recently opened Genesis games. If you want any specific game on the Genesis library, let me know. I should be able to help.

From the list of Genesis games you asked for: (Sorry for not showing yet the Menacer Gun contents. It took me a while to set it up amidst other boxes in the closet and that one is going to take a lot more energy to showcase).

    NFL '95

    World Series Baseball '95

Sonic the Hedgehog: Spinball - Cardboard Box variant

Vectorman - Mega Hit Series variant

[img]... Ah damn. I think I may have deleted the photo of the back of the items. Please don't make me open it again.

    Vectorman 2

Funny World and Balloon Boy - X2 variants (one with back label, one without)

Mike Ditka Power Football - Video Game Classics variant

Arcade Classics - Cardboard box variant

Menacer 6-Game Cartridge (Will be posting full contents of the Menacer gun later).
