Default Wow, Japan Arcades still thriving.

This was a very cool video of how awesome the Japanese are when it comes to videogames. Too bad Arcades had to die out here in the West. And no wonder it failed here and not there (in other words, watch the video).

Makes me wish Dave & Busters had a better selection of games instead of mediocre Raw Thrills games & Android/Iphone ports

Glad to see arcades alive and well somewhere, shame they aren't huge in the US anymore. Sure you have retro arcades and all, but they are few and far between.

    Exactly this. :/

There's an arcade in Ohio at Cincinnati Mills that me and my brother go to called Arcade Legacy, which I believe I've posted about a few years ago here. It's all older arcade games, but they also have newer consoles there, and they frequently hold tournaments for games like Street Fighter and Smash Bros.

My brother also recently visited our sister in Denver Colorado, and he went to this Arcade. I'm glad that there are at least some dedicated places around here and there that are ran by fans of them from back in the day. It's a shame that they're a thing of the past outside of Japan. :/

It could go the other way around(3 year old article alert):

It's kind of weird, I miss arcade games, at least for their influence, if nothing else, but I was never particularly outgoing, or knew of any nearby, outside of dedicated sections of a mall, or something. I remember playing Pengo at a breakfast restaurant, or something. Also, some of Konami's beat 'em ups at a school field trip, and that was really about it for my standing arcade cabinet experience. I might have tried Double Dragon somewhere too, after having played the NES version(which was the spark of my love for the genre).

I've been to Arcade Legacy a few times, but not since I moved away from Cincinnati about 3 years ago. Great place, good cab selection, plus they sold used games as well and had decent prices when I was last there. That mall was a ghost town, but that place was usually busy. I remember playing the Bucky O' Hare cab and Battletoads all the way through. Both games were nothing like their console counterparts.

Yes, their influence is what I miss most about them too.

I have no finer memories of my youth then to remember all of the great arcades i'd been to. Nothing brings a smile to my face more then remembering my cousin and i beating Fatal Fury at Clovis lakes, or my brother and i squaring off in Art of Fighting and being floored by the huge characters and zooming screes at the tomorrowland arcade at disneyland. Its too bad kids nowadays dont have that experience, as i have met some good dudes and niiiiice girls at the arcade!

    I haven't been to too many Arcades in the 90s, been when I was, it's as you say. Here are some memories of mine;

    - seeing TMNT the Arcade game while with my mom at a mall and being floored. Remember Wrestlemania then later SF2 being there too. You couldn't do this on Nintendo, lol. But was still super excited to play TMNT2 for NES after.
    - later at that same mall (Pen Centre, St. Catharines, Ontario), I remember being expelled from PlayDay at school (grade 7), so I went with some cash to play MK2 there instead and kick other player butt for my PlayDay, lol. Aliens VS Predator, D&D and Race Drivin were there too.
    - later still my one friend's mom and her new boyfriend wanted to go to underneath the Tower at Niagara Falls (Canada side) where there was an Arcade center with an insane amount of Arcade games. Including 8 hooked up full size massive screen Daytona USA machines (only time I ever seen that). Only seen pics of it in GamePro before, but to play this game. Man, I kept begging for more change to play it, lol. If only I had more change... the story of every kid back then.
    - an event get together with a couple of grade school friends to go to this other Arcade center at another mall, that to my surprise was pretty big and epic, because we heard MK3 was released and MK hype was real big back then. I went to this place a few more times later on my own time. But too bad it eventually closed too soon, thus ending my Arcade life in that city before it even really began.
    - I remember in my older age in about the year 2000 I went with this other friend to Wonderland or something amusement park. Once I found the Arcade center with a ton of disposable cash (finally! I could play at an Arcade center for as long as I wanted! Dream come true at last!) I didn't even want to leave that place for the entire day. Too bad I wasn't alone and with a friend who had to drag me out of there to see the rest of the place.
    - and about 10 years ago this local bar 1 minute away from my place got Daytona 2! Finally, I could play this game for the first time and drink ma beer too. Man. I played the heck out of Daytona USA 2 there. Filled the Advanced and Expert highscore with my initials. But could never come close to figuring out how this one person got these crazy scores for the beginner course. And I knew about drift lines, of course (think it's explained in the demo). I even tried to see if there was a glitch like rubbing off the walls without slowing down much as in some other racers, but nope. Never figured it out. But who cares, Beginner course was boring anyway. Otherwise, I'm glad I was able to sink in so much time in Daytona USA 2 before it got replaced with some lame hunting game the old barfly men went crazy for.

They've opened several large arcades in a couple of malls in the Dallas area.

A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."
