Total Games Count -Sports

Anyone have a rough estimate of the total games in the Genesis library (US retail) if you don't count all the sports games? Would be greatly appreciated.

Well according to gamefaqs lists of us retail genesis sports games (excluding wwf wrestling games), there is 236 sports games.

That is too high of a number. It had a lot of sports games, but not that much. I don't want to make assumptions, but that list has a number of the same games but under different names. They are listing the European names of those releases if you filter to retail and US releases. They also list cancelled games on there, too.

Yes you need to be specific because sports includes racing (but not driving) and anything from in the olympics (including boxing and wrestling) besides the Olympics games themselves. Things like skateboarding, surfing, boating, etc would only count if they followed the relative formats used in the Olympics or in actual competitions. It can also include games like pool. But some people like to define sports as the 4 major sports: baseball, football, hockey and basketball in the US, and we can say maybe Soccer for the rest of the world. And then games like racing does not end up counting to what they mean.

Heh, that's an interesting question. I wouldn't consider driving a sports game, but if someone does will that remove gems like Road Rash or Hang On? What about Outrun?

By the same database, there's more than twice that for action games, let alone adding the other genres.

Actually, I don't know how you got the 21 extra, this is what I found listed at GameFAQs when I posted it in the AVGN thread, in reply to their "1/3 the genesis' library is sports" remark in the first Sonic 2 video:

Don't forget, there are some exclusive Japanese sports titles, like an anime based dodgeball game, an anime based Golf game, a sumo wrestling game, and I'm sure plenty of others.
