^They do state at Limited Run Games that the choice for print size comes from the developer, though:

    From their FAQ page:
How do you decide a print size?

The print sizes are determined by the developer. We will always push for a bigger run, but ultimately it is their decision.
    .

But I can understand there has to be pressure from every angle.

It's absolutely not true. LRG are advancing the cost, of course it's up to them to decide (and of course we're negotiating to get more done, within their typical limits/range), if it was up to us to decide how much LRG should pay and manufacture, we'd want one million.

Yeah, it figures they would want to keep runs limited. It's their business model, after all.

It's easy to get caught-up in the hype. But after "limited run" #50 or so, you start to wonder, when every game is "rare", then nothing is. Not every game needs a physical release.***Crappy Genesis homebrews, I'm looking in your direction***.

To be fair, there will be a select few of those releases that will be sought after in the end, simply because they rise above the rest. This being one of them. I hope I'm one of the lucky few who gets to purchase one within that first two minute window.

I agree on "limited runs." The reason LRG does it is to cater to the collectard crowd.

I can get an actual limited run limited to the production of pre-orders plus a few more for the sake of costs, but setting the order super low so that regular people have to fight collectards to get a copy for the sake of "prestige" or artificially keeping the secondary market price up is disgusting.

I suppose the lesson here is to remember that if you just want to play the game, it is available as a download (usually for cheaper). Also, probably not a good idea to chase after every single release...just ones you're super interested in (not that it wouldn't suck to not get a copy of a game you really wanted)

Personally, the only Limited Run game I've picked up is the PS4 Darius Burst Limited Edition. I also want a copy of Night Trap when it gets released. That's about all I'm interested in at this point. I'd be cool to have a couple others (like WB: Dragon's Trap), but not really necessary. I don't have as much room anymore to practically deal with physical games, though, so there is that.

I'll always prefer physical media, but its no longer a burning necessity (I imagine the super cheap prices of Steam games helped temper that need somewhat).

I have a feeling based on your comment you inferred from my statement that I may have purchased the first 50 LRG releases. That is not what I said.

I've bought one LRG game. And that was not even from LRG. I had to resort to eBay. And that's because I got it for cheaper than what LRG sold it in the first place. I refuse to pay artificially-inflated prices. Right now there are less than a handful of LRG games I'm interested in. Darius Burst being one of them, but I missed-out on that one like with the rest of the other ones I wanted to buy from them.

P.S.> I only buy games I'm interested in.

It's frustrating that the LRG releases are hard to get but honestly I think it's AMAZING they exist.

    - Most of those games wouldn't have a chance at getting a physical release at all.
    - Their business model (internet order + reducing risk through limited stock) is allowing them to give a decent cut to developers.

If they made the runs much bigger, it would create a situation where
    1) games may not sellout as people wouldn't be motivated to buy at all, with risk of actually losing money on a run
    2) they would have to manage stock and logistic at a very different level, which would increase their cost
And they would become a traditional physical publisher.. So they are unique now and it's good.
The model where they "artificially" reduce the run count is an important component to the entire business and keeps them healthy.

What utterly sad are the people buying them to keep them shrinkwrapped and selling back. Just buy the games you want to play.

I can't give numbers, but publisher/developer are getting a decent cut on LRG physical releases (mind you, it's still relatively small because of this model they found which pretty much guarantee that games are selling.
On _regular_ typical retail physical releases the cut for developers are so small they are basically a scam for developers, and hurting the industry IMHO. Willingly or not, when you buy a game at Walmart you are giving money to Walmart and distribution channels and practically nothing to game makers.

Not at all, although I had inferred that you'd bought at least a couple. So, I was wrong as far as that goes.

My statement was more a general statement and not necessarily directed at you. I do a fair amount of bopping back and forth between the couple of forums I'm active on, this one and NeoGaf being two of them (there are basically two others, I don't live my life on forums )

I've followed the NeoGaf thread on LRG and am seeing buyers fatigue start to creep in. Risk of Rain, for example, took two days to sell out. There are completionists to be sure, but I think a lot of the enthusiast market is starting to realize that the encouragement that LRG needs now (beyond specific titles that might be worth doing) are to push for larger print runs and maybe start pushing for reprints.

I'm with you as far as buying LRG releases goes. Again, I've only bought one and it was a perfect storm of circumstances that enabled it (Having the money, having access to a computer at the right time, actually having noticed that the game was available, ect).

I'm glad you mention that. I've been wondering myself when this "buyers' fatigue" was going to kick in. I know I was super interested in one of their first ones (Oddworld), which obviously I missed-out on. After that, there were a slew of games I just wasn't interested in at all. It's like hard copy versions of smart phone games, if you know what I mean. I'm sure there is a market for that out there, it's just not my cup of tea. Games like the Shantae ones, Oddworld, Darius, a couple of RPGs and obviously Wonder Boy are about the only ones that have caught my interest.

As someone that was on the LRG train up until like last month buyer's fatigue hit me just recently. I've moaned about this on other forums, but I'm off the train until there is something I want now that there are too many releases.
