Indeed. I've been reading books recently from many years back from such authors as Algernon Blackwood and H.P Lovecraft, and at times I'm laughing out loud at some words and sections of stories which, given a modern context, would be considered extremely offensive, if not out and out racist by today's standards. Nobody denies the great writers that were the likes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Lovecraft, but give their books to a modern audience? Well, let's just say there'd be people just dying to let you know how offended they were.

Look what has happened to "Blazing Saddles" - seems every time I see it on tv now more seems to have been chopped out of it. I can't even that it would be possible to make that movie in today's weird world.

When Blazing Saddles was new, nobody seemed to be upset by it, but now, labels (with nothing under them) are outrage engines that screech on social networking that X is racist, W is sexist, Z is N-phobic, and everything that goes wrong is the fault of Y-people ;-).

I love on the movie Anchor Man, the statement, "Jazz flute is for fairies", gets taken out of the T.V. cut, but they left in "It smells like Bigfoot's dick". There is other crazy shit like that. Of course my wife like the TNT show Animal Kingdom where guys are violently butt fucking each other breaking walls and furniture where they show everything except the actual penetration. She also believes that as a straight man married to her, a woman, this is something that I should get great enjoyment in watching.

My wife thought that I’d like Brokeback Mountain. What was she thinking?
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

My wife also desperately wanted to watch this and wanted me to watch it. I told her I didn't want to and never did. I told her if she wanted, I would buy her the uncut extended edition but she declined because I wouldn't watch it with her. Then some years later we ended up getting a movie called Chloe from Netflix knowing nothing about it. It just had big name actors Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried so it got thrown on the queue. There ended up being an explicit lesbian sex scene between Moore and Seyfried and my wife was kind of shocked and offended by it. I smiled and thought, what the fuck, you want me to watch dudes bone when you don't enjoy lesbo scenes, do you see how your retarded? Then I thought, she will get angry if I even bring up the logic. Logic angers my wife. I basically a mute at times for I have to second guess every statement I make as truth and logic cause an angry reaction. Especially if it takes a length of time longer than a short one.

Reading through this thread, I think a lot of people miss the nuance of conflating liberals and leftists, as they are two distinct factions. Of course, this is all within the insane framework of US politics, which are more right-wing than the rest of the world. To my mind, there are the Democrats, interested in keeping things status quo, and Republicans, interested in rolling the country back to a previous era. The only group actually arguing for fundamental forward change are leftists, the Senate numbers of which can be counted on one hand.

See I can agree with this partly. My issues is while change can be a good thing, sometimes if you try and force changes on a populous who feels that they're losing their own identity because of it or persecuted and pre-judged by people because of their own skin color be it black, brown, white or w/e then there's a problem. As American's we have so many things that people here take for granted all the damn time and it makes me roll my eyes how small and petty some people can be.

I think to myself sometimes that the shit people have in here in the U.S. as far as rights go have no idea how really good they have it. Go to some 3rd world country and see if people even give two shits about your feelings or hate speech, chances are you'll either be shot, killed, or thrown in jail because you're causing a public disturbance. I'm happy I live here but at the same time we enable far too much bullshit without fear of repercussions and in the end those same people arn't ready to deal with the real life consequences of their own misguided actions.

the biggest problem isn't so much the third world countries anymore. they are rapidly improving. it's many first world countries going to shits like uk and usa due to even bigger income inequality than before. this will ruin their internal economies since the middle class is disappearing.

if you have to work 60-70 hours to stay alive you know you live in a shithole. especially when there are people around in your country who are billionaires.

this is very typical. I live in one of the richest and most equal countries in the world. sometimes people will go to me and tell me they went to romania or south africa, or whatever country and say wow, we are so lucky and I say: really? I've been to norway, luxemburg and switzerland and compared to that we are fucked. why always compare to countries that are off worse?

Ironically I've never seen Brokeback Mountain, nor have any particular interest in doing so. I know what it's about, and I get why it was an important film and all, but I'm just not interested really. Give me a well crafted thriller, sci-fi or horror film and I'm a happy guy. I did find the general public's reaction to Brokeback Mountain very interesting though back when it came out. I knew guys that had seen it, and liked it, but refused to admit they'd seen it to other guys in case people thought they were gay. I remember thinking at the time "Surely most straight guys can't be THAT insecure?!" Turns out a lot of them are lol.

    That's racist.

I doubt there's a group of guys more afraid of being seen as gay by their co-workers than guys in construction. Oddly enough, however, this was my group of friends and we passed this movie around to each other when it came out on DVD (always, of course, with some explanation like "Anne Hathaway totally shows her tits in this movie, bro."

I really had a problem with a movie that was asking me to care about a relationship between two people who were cheating on their spouses to be together. I don't care whether they were gay or not.

But yeah, Anne Hathaway had some pretty nice tits in this movie.

Sorry for the massive dose of racism there. Won't happen again.

Yeah I can't stand people who cheat on their partners either. Be they straight, gay, trans, bi, pan, animal, vegetable, mineral, extraterrestrial or a multi dimensional lifeform. I can only apologize for any groups that I've left out. I wasn't trying to be exclusionary. Please don't sue me...please... I'm begging you.
