Well, having purchased it from Humble Bundle ($17.99 with a subscription), I can say I'm enjoying it. I like the graphical style, the gameplay works well, the difficulty options are nicely spread out, there's a ton of stuff to unlock (not buy... thank God), and the familiar and new enemies that are around put up a good fight (though I hate those taser-carrying pricks). The music isn't too bad either, with some good tracks scattered about thus far. Picking it up and getting into the game was a like putting on a glove you've worn a hundred times, in that it still feels like a Streets of Rage game for the most part. Sure, it's missing a dash to get through levels quicker, and perhaps more things could have been added to the gameplay to advance it beyond SoR2, but there was literally no chance that they could make everyone happy in that aspect. Add too much, and it ruins the old formula. Add too little, and it's sticking too close to the formula. No way to win there.

Maybe it's not the evolution some wanted it to be, or maybe it didn't take this or that trait from a past game and use it like some wanted, but at the end of the day, I'm having fun. That's what I bought it for.

I'm loving it. They really hit it out of the park. I can gripe about a few minor things here and there -- don't care for Axel's hip shirt look, soundtrack's a bit weak, and not being able to escape hit-stun with a special definitely is a sour point -- but this is such a refreshing sequel which stays true to the core gameplay but updates it for modern expectations. The art is gorgeous, the animation good enough (come on, the game's never gonna get an AAA budget), and the gameplay is solid. I love the dedicated pick-up button, which reduces the occasional attack/pick-up issues as well as allow for weapons to be caught in air. Really don't understand how people can seemingly look at this and, say, Sonic 4 with similar levels of disgust, but that's thankfully not my problem.

It's on Game Pass, so if you have it or a trial you can play it for free. I'll definitely pick this one up, and I only wish there was an Xbox One Limited Run edition. Can't wait to play some more and try out the 4-player mode.

I pre-ordered a physical copy (PS4) from Limited Run Games. This is only my second purchase from them.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

I can understand bashing Shenmue III because it was mostly a heap of steaming dogshit with a few redeeming factors. Most reviewers hated it.

Back to my point. You same guys are on a crusade to discredit anyone that has successfully made or in the process of making a Sega remake or sequel. I just don't get it. These games don't have political agendas. The core elements (music, game play, play mechanics, physics, etc.) are all great. The designers went out of their way to please everyone (OG soundtrack, pixel based characterless, pixel graphics, scan lines, all the original characters). As far as I'm concerned the game is an amazing feat of engineering, talent, sound, and programming.

Sammy... uh, I mean Sega of Japan talent is mostly dead with absolutely no desire to resurrect any of its classic franchises outside of Sonic and Yakuza. So when someone else takes the initiative to embrace and create new content based on classic Sega you guys cry foul every single goddamn time.

And for the unsubstantiated claim of fake reviews and "this game is made for casual games" in completely false. Casual gamers play games like eSports , Minecraft, Call of Duty, Madden, NBA 2K, FIFA, and smart device games. I guarantee you if you went to any college or high school campus and you mentioned Streets of Rage or Bare Knuckle, no one would even have a clue as to what you were talking about.

Sega Lord & Digital Foundry for example are not fake reviewers. Just look at the videos I posted. Far leftist Kotaku and Polygon of all websites praised Streets of Rage IV. I'm shocked they didn't pull the misogyny or alphabet gang card.

Like the old saying, haters are gonna hate and you guys are no exception.
Maybe I should be condescending to you ..Maybe you were one of those happy when SEGA said it was making a new Golden Axe, Sega Rally, NiGHTS? The usual lot, who only care if it's a sequel to a legacy title and go nuts if it's got a number in the title

I didn't mind the remake of Wonderboy,: the art fitted the style. Sorry the new Panzer Dragoon game looks pretty rubbish, I dislike the new Art in Streets and the fact that is plays so much slower than SOR 3 and taken out moves like the Roll..But it does play nice enough, just nothing special

And maybe instead of posting the usual SEGA Japan hate .You actually took to time to play their games . Sakura Wars and Valykrie 4 are actually splended updates , to classic IP.. I very much you've ever played then or even the likes of Judgement

And don't please let's not being DF and Eurogamer into this . I remember the good old UK Resistance days and pointing out Eurogamer bais against SEGA, while talking up SONY .

I do like SEGA lord very much mind, but don't agree with him on this one . That's gaming...

During the years, one thing that I noticed is that majority of Sega fans and gamers in general, only likes and enjoy their favourite games on a very superficial level.
They simply happen to like something, without really understanding or guessing WHY.

That's because they are all ready to accept any kind of imitation game that vaguely resemble the original ones.

And that's the same reason why people who instead understands Sega's DNA, despise this kind of initiatives that only destroy the legacy of Sega.

Now with SOR4 things got better than expected, it's a nice game, still that's not a really SOR game, it's just a french comic style indie brawler with characters and music that resemble the ones from SOR.
But in other cases things got ugly, like that disgrace of Panzer Dragoon Remake that some people still try to defend around on socials.

Fans should start to request this to Sega when asking for sequels: "yes we want sequels from legacy title, but ONLY if developed by the original team, not an imitation made by others".

It's kind of pathetic seeing "sega fans" defending imitations like Panzer Dragoon Remake or accepting this game as the rightful forth game of SOR, while at the same time seeing lots of unreasonable hate and nitpicking for Shenmue 3 or Space Channel 5 VR (games that are instead the only example of real Sega games produced outside Sega).

You seem to have a personal issue with people having different opinions on the game but there's no need for personal attacks and false accusations.

I pre-ordered Sonic Mania and enjoyed it since day 1.
I own most of Sega's catalog on Steam and that includes Whitehead's Sonic CD which I never ever criticized.
And it's not "Wonder Boy in Monster World" you're trying to refer to, it's "Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap" which I also own and never ever criticized.

I did criticize Sonic Forces and didn't support it. Funny enough, it's an official Sonic Team game; so your whole point about a personal vendetta against new Sega partners seems to be false; at least as far as I am concerned.

I also own 90% of Dotemu's catalog on Steam; does that percentage qualifies me as a Dotemu hater? I don't think so.
SOR4 is in my wishlist now since the regional price of it is around 3x the one Sonic Mania had on launch; so considering some of the hardcore SOR players criticisms, I'll buy it on a discount.
And I queued to play the game on EGX last year; I guess that makes me a SOR4 hater too.

As I said, most/all issues hardcore players such as zyrobs reported are not relevant to casual beat'em up players. People who haven't followed the series close enough in terms of gameplay mechanics and whatnot won't even bother.

I don't like the art style and I'm entitled to dislike it.
I think the sfx are weak and I'm entitled to have my opinion on that too.

I never advocated the idea of boycotting the product; so, again, your argument seems to be based on a bunch of exaggerated, false and angry claims.

Enjoy the game and praise it if you want. It doesn't hurt me.
I'll keep giving my views about the game on what I want, as I want, when I want. You're not obligated to read nor to reply.
But if you want to come with personal accusations over opinions on the game, at least get your facts straight.

    @zyrobs
I don't know if you've already seen it but Anthopants (which is probably the best SOR player out there) has released this:

It's a very interesting video IMO talking about several gameplay details as he plays.

I can respect that. Didn't mean to come off the wrong way. Everyone is entitled to an opinion no doubt. It just seems that people like to give Sega a free pass and give independent developers that take initiative unmitigated criticism.

If you think this thread is bad, consider there's somebody on Twitter trying to lead a crusade against SOR4 because it's not a '90s nostalgiafest with Neo Geo style graphics and has started to pester the Sega accounts to tell them to stop giving franchises to third parties immediately because it's destroying them or something.

This shit is like the gaming equivalent of the cranky old guy yelling at the kids.

I don't want to deepen this discussion, I know who the guy you're talking to, I found his attitude totally disastrous, coming from a person who is dev and is building a game, he's a talented guy but he's acting like an idiot.
