It's a fair point.
Meh Bul is an idiot who thrives on trying to be edgy and a bully. Don't care. He's boring. And thank you. that's exactly it. I'm frustrated that SEGA isn't still making consoles. I know the market can't support 4 consoles so many at some point they and MS become best friends and Xbox didn't happen. I don't know. Just SEGA has some of the best IPs in gaming and 98% have gone to waste last 20 years unused.

People like this fail to see that if the RIGHT decisions had been made, then Sega would have exited the home hardware market after the Genesis (even Kalinske supported this move). It was essentially one man (Hayao Nakayama) who insisted that Sega continue to battle giants in the home hardware market, while most everybody else said it was a bad idea.
Well said, the same SEGA japan that made the MD hardware and some of its best games. Under Nakayama time @ SEGA.Sega Japan was the best for making games and thanks to that man that SEGA grew its consumer teams, had the AM teams work on consumer games, develop the best Arcade boards and games going never mind, he employed people like Tom Kalinske in the 1st place.

Can anyone trust what Tom says. He told Retro gamer that he thought SEGA should have pulled out of the Hardware market after the MD and let Sony make the Hardware instead and thats why he looked to set up SEGA soft for SEGA to become 3rd party. Tom also told Retro Gamer that the DC should never have happened.

The most interesting thing about the Jaguar is when it was discontinued the shell was repurposed into Dental Equipment.

Oh, and that one time a magainze company tried to use the shell as a Coleco comeback with a SNES2/old PC capture card as it's real hardware. Atari sure has had the strangest stories when it comes to failure. This and Carts buries in the desert.

That’s why he wanted to partner with Sony. He wanted Sony to manufacture the console, while SEGA worked on software. It’s sort of like what Trip Hawkins was trying to do with the 3DO, except that the hardware was too expensive to sell.

Will always upset me that didn't happen. What do you guys think if SEGA took up STI's offer for their graphics chip?

So for SEGA to pull of the Hardware consumer business. Not that was a option to SOJ. SONY was locked in a deal with Nintendo and after that deal fell through, SONY Japan then president said we go alone 'and chart our own course' . Making their own Hardware was in SEGA DNA, its why twice SEGA refused to join the 3DO camp.

Its maybe a shame SEGA didn't look to Samsung to have them help with R&D and the cost of developing and producing a console, given the huge reach Samsung had even back in the mid 90s. Mind you i wanted SEGA to be sold to Microsoft at back in 2000 when CSK were in talks to sell thier stake in MS.

At the ene of the day, its not hardware that sells a console product, its games. Sega didnt make a game that could sell its systems like Sonic for the Mega Drive on the world stage. Even with the better Hardware the Lynx couldn't match the GameGear, the Xbox vs the PS2, the 360 vs the WIi, Vita vs the 3DS, Xbox One X Vs the PS4 Pro, Master system Vs the NES..

It all relates back to the Sony-Sega tie-up. Kalinske (and others) wanted Sega to become a privileged 3rd party to Sony, just as Namco eventually would, because hardware was too expensive to develop.

Although it's never been discussed here before, the Japanese Sega executives did have a series of meetings with Sony about this, but after long consideration the deal did not go through. Basically, Nakayama would not do it because he wanted to remain in the hardware game.

Even before that, though, there was internal pressure to drop out of the home hardware market:

Nakayama wanted SEGA to be a great hardware company, and Mr. Okawa [Sega Chairman] simply did not. Tom Kalinske affirms that this was the case even early in his tenure: "Okawa was telling [Nakayama] to get out of hardware; just become a software company; it's not worth it to keep fighting the hardware battle. He started saying that right from the beginning."
    https://www.ign.com/articles/2009/04...f-sega?page=10

All of the evidence made it clear that Sega should have gone 3rd party: other established arcade giants like Konami, Capcom, and Namco were enjoying huge success, and the costs of hardware development and manufacture were very clearly skyrocketing. Sega did not have enough money in the bank to continue.

Nevertheless, Nakayama made the decision to stay in the hardware business. Ultimately, that was clearly a "bad decision," yet without it then all of the Sega nerds in the world would never have gotten their Saturns and Dreamcasts.

So it's just silly when people call Nakayama a shithead who ruined Sega. We wouldn't be here posting about this stuff if not for his "bad decisions."
