PS4 How has the 8th gen of systems been for you?

I see some people on this site and even other gaming sites refuse to go into modern gaming. For those of us who are into it now has, it treated you? As of this post, I have 62 retail copies of games on my PS4. 32 retail Switch games. This is the first generation I didn't get an Xbox as it just has so little to offer in exclusives and PS4 mainly have me covered for Japanese games. I have not counted digital games for PC or PS4 and Switch and a good portion are Neo Geo games or old arcade games. Rest are PS+ games. Honestly, I been drowning in great games this generation. A lot more than last gen. Indies have been great as well. Still, see some people say "worst gen ever" and while yeah AAA greed is as it's worst. Plenty of other great stuff that offsets it for me.While I did enjoy last gen and had all 3 systems that gen, I had far more issues with devs then than I do now. It was mostly trends and growing pains that are now mostly gone. This gen has maybe 1 more year left uncontested by its successors and I'm just not ready for it to end.

    Life?!...What console is that on?

It bothers me that people include the Switch as 8th gen
It is the first of the 9th. The Wii U was 8th. The Wii was 7th. The Gamecube was 6th. The N64 was 5th. The SNES was 4th.

Please people, stop. Ever since the Wii, power had nothing to do with Nintendo's generational leaps. Call it "gimmicks", "innovation", love it or hate it, but deal with it.

The Switch is 9th gen. Period.

Switch and Wii U gen thing is a whole other debate. But please keep it out of here. Thank you.

For what it's worth I believe Wii U is 8th gen but Switch is an anomaly that can be debated in both ways.

Really only the PS4 has been bringing things to the table that aren't multiplatform stuff. I don't like Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo as companies, so I have no loyalty toward any. I'm running off of the metric of console exclusives that aren't throwaway trash from Devry drop-outs living on Hipster Welfare while they make the perfect Mario fangame.

The best gen since the OG XBox and PS2. The One X is the best none SEGA system I have ever owned...I love it and PSVR is out of this world amazing and the most amazing experience in gaming for decades

It's kind of dismaying to see the PS4/XBOne exclusives that do remain, and don't come to PC. It's gotten to the point where there's nothing except exclusivity contracts preventing ports over.

Switch exclusives are somewhat more forgivable, more than a few games either work thanks to the touch screen or other portable aspects, or sheer Nintendo-being-Nintendo. But the exclusives that could very well work alright on PC still hurt.

Perhaps I'm just showing my PC stripes here. I only have five physical titles from this generation on my shelf, and they're all for the Switch.
I don't even have anything from the previous generation on my shelf!

Exclusives are what sell consoles, a console without exclusives would be indistinguishable from other consoles these days, they're all cheap computers with restricted operating systems.

Microsoft seems to have completely forgotten that with the Xbox One and sales hurt accordingly. Even after the huge no-used games, mandatory kinect debacle, if they had any good exclusives it wouldn't have mattered. Unfortunately they have only 1 good exclusive (Forza), and for the rest they just have to hope people value a few more pixels onscreen and a better controller over better games.

PS4 exclusives (including games that previously were exclusive) are easily some of the best games this gen. A high budget single-player game like God of War could only happen because of that sweet Sony money.

I really like the new Killer Instinct and I'd love to own a physical copy but that is the only MS exclusive I care about and I just cannot justify buying a console for that. I don't care about Gears, Halo or Forza. If they still made Project Gotham be nice but still not enough. Scalebound was the game I would have made the exception to. I love Platinum a lot. I was ready to buy an Xbox to play it. That and Phantom Dust Remake. MS canceled a lot of exclusives this gen and the ones they have..just are so few and mostly mediocre. It's a shame. I would buy one tho if they announced a full true sequel to Blue Dragon, Unpopular opinion but I liked a lot more than LO. One can debate if Scalebound looked great or not but there is no doubt MS befuddled many projects this generation. They royally screwed Phantom Dust Remake devs out of a job. Spencer has done a lot of nice things with Xbox but under his leadership, they have fallen short of the most important aspect. Exclusives. Just pulling out the wallet and buying everyone doesn't really solve the problem as seen when they bought an awful developer with the We Happy Few devs. Sony and Nintendo develop them and sign deals getting some great stuff like Spiderman or Until Dawn and Nintendo with Bayonetta and Ocotpath Traveler. I hope they straighten it out next gen. I have always liked playing on Xbox consoles. Not trying to be "lol fuck Xbox" just feel they failed to grab me as a customer and I'm not the only one.

Yeah, this has been the most disappointing console generation for me. I've had my PS4 since a year after launch, and I've played maybe 25 games and own/kept a little over a dozen of those titles on the console. The one plus is that I got a really cool collector's edition of DariusBurst Chronicles Savior from Japan. I don't care about the Xbox One, since my PC is about 3 or 4 more times as powerful and has a ton more software options. It just seems like this generation has developers more concerned with making cash cow online games and less big studios putting out quality games.

The 360 and PS3 has a ton of good titles and I still have over 50 titles I've kept for the 360 and maybe 75 for the PS3. They just had so many great titles every year, even in 2012. Those consoles were beasts when they came out, and building a solid PC back then was uber-expensive, compared to 2013, where $750 could build you a superior console to the launch PS4 and XboxOne.

The Switch is interesting, because it is portable. I'm still on the fence about getting the console, but I see a lot of potential in what the console can do, especially on the go.
A Black Falcon: no, computer games and video games are NOT the same thing. Video games are on consoles, computer games are on PC. The two kinds of games are different, and have significantly different design styles, distribution methods, and game genre selections. Computer gaming and console (video) gaming are NOT the same thing."

MS are doing little different from the 360 days. MS Have made quite a few high budget AAA single player games too. MS just screwed up at the Hardware level with the pants that was Kinect and a underpowered GPU and a lack of deals with Japanese 3rd parties. With the One X they've put that right, but need some deals with the likes of FromSoftware imo

They're definitely trying to set things right, it's just a little too late.

This gen has really gotten my attention again. While I don't particularly care for most modern games, the indie scene has really taken off this go 'round.

Its not a question of putting things right, its just a matter of looking at it, fairly and not like some the rabid fanboys on resetera or NeoGaf. People may not like them, but the likes of Ryse, Quantum Break, Halo V, Gears Of War IV had huge amounts of money spent on them and were mean to be MS AAA single player games, this talk of lack of exclusives baffels me somewhat.
SONY always had the upper hand over MS in that, thats been the case since the OG XBox and in the 360 Era MS saw fit to sell off its #1 In-House Studio BUNiGE, close down fasta studio and Indie Built ect. Allow Team Ninja to go 3rd party and Ninja Gaiden II to be on the PS3, allowed Lost Planet to go on the PS3 and even Mass Effect IP; A huge IP which MS spent a fortune working with Bioware on and speaking of which MS saw fit to see Bioware, Dice go to EA and its 1st Party studio Bizare Creations go to Activision.

Yet nobody seem to care, becasue the 360 was selling loads. Robbie Bach did more than anyone to destory MS In-House studios imo

Just about all of the Xbox One exclusives can be played on PC, while the exclusives on the PS4 and Switch cannot.
