MAME - Alien vs Predator arcade game is giving me no sound :(

Guys to put it simply, I went and checked out MAME emulation after not using it for years but have forgotten how annoying it can get when they update the emulator as it can affect the games heavily.


The only game I want to play right now is Alien vs Predator the arcade game. I have all the files needed to launch it but the problem is there's no sound at all in the game. There's some bs with the QSOUND file that needs to be updated or renamed, I've tried many options related to this but didn't help me out at all. Even using earlier versions of MAME did no good.


If anyone here knows a way for me to be able to play the game fully with sound, due to rules of linking sharing.... please pm me. I really, really want to play this game with my brother.


I am not getting anywhere closer to playing this game with sound.

Maybe download the rom again from a site that updates with M.A.M.E. fairly frequently. Some of the other Capcom games might also have the file as well(Final Fight, Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, Street Fighter II, etc.), so if any of those are running well, try pulling the file from them.

Ok, still nothing...

I went to Archive and found 'MAME 0.197 R.' made uploaded in 2018. I downloaded MAME 2018 emulator. No bloody qsound file on the game files itself anywhere but did find one on the list itself of MAME 197.
Downloaded it, dragged it to the avs.zip file and now I can launch the game again but still no sound. Same for The Punisher the arcade.

Renaming it, placing it out the rom folder and in the game file itself, different qsound files I went and find, nothing...



This is so %$%^ing tedious I swear...

Updating with M.A.M.E. always is... (especially if you're like me and 10+ revisions will go by before you do it)



...2018? I've only seen revisions of M.A.M.E. referred to that in RetroPie. If that's what you're doing(and I feel sorry for what you went through to compile it, if it is), you'd be better off using Final Burn Alpha for CPS(and even Sega) roms.

I just tried the 0.185 avsp.zip on my 0.185 MAME build and it wouldn't load...

OK, got it working.

First, you have to match the ROM version with the MAME version. I'm not sure what you downloaded with "MAME 2018", but that's probably not matching the ROM you got.

You can find previous versions of MAME here:

I'm using 0.185 now (the ROMset for this is available on archive.org).

Put the avsp.zip file in your ROMs folder.

Also download the qsound.zip file from the ROMset. Place this in the ROMs folder as well (don't place it within the avsp.zip file).

It should work then.

So I went and got the 64bit version of MAME 185, I even found 3 set types of MAME roms for 185...

For all 3 sets,... I downloaded the game, avsp and the qsound zipped files. dragged both of them into the roms folder. I STILL don't get sound.

I did this for the merge, non merge and split sets and non of them still gave me sound.






Man.....I don't know if there's something in the settings that needs to be enabled in the emulator or something...

Wait a minute, time freaking out. The game had sound this whole time!

For some reason though, (keep in mind, I don't know much of MAME or arcade settings apart from the basics) When I launch games like Alien vs Pred or the Punisher. Their openings/demos have no sound on them like the ones I saw/heard on youtube playthroughs of them but once I 'insert' my coin, the sound is there. What's up with that??

Regardless, I finally have sounds on them.


One last question though, when it comes to getting an arcade rom from like a romset I posted previously.

Which is the recommended choice below?

-Non-Merge
-Split

Imagine that.

When I first saw your thread my first thought was "attract mode is normally set to silent" but then I figured you'd at least have tried to play the game so it would have to be something else.
