I've tested Zabuyaki, it's a really cool game, congratulations Stifu!
The spriteworks is amazing, and the battle system feels "right" (I like the special moves too).

I'm looking forward the next version!

And if you make a Genesis port, I guess most people here waiting for Paprium will enjoy it A LOT!

    Thanks a lot, guys.
Porting Zabuyaki to the Genesis is a dream of mine. But first things first, we need to finish the computer version, which is no small task.

So, Kraut Buster (http://www.kraut-buster.com/), a Neo Geo game that started development in 2015 (I think 2 years after paprium?) was released today. And that game was delayed a couple times too. And it is way more impressive than what was shown of paprium at the party (even the early alpha versions of KB had enemies, go figure). I definitely do not think paprium will ever be released. Glad I got my refund.

NG Dev is one of my favorite developers, they have pushed the Neo Geo like no one else since SNK. Their games tend to cost around $500 apiece, which is probably a realistic price for the Paprium that Fonzie envisioned. Their carts even have flash memory and can be patched if bugs are found later. I don't know what they do for copy protection but after their first run of Last Hope not a single game has been bootlegged.

I think Fonzie could have learned a lot from the NG Dev team but I get the impression that if he ever contacted them he would have burned that bridge very quickly.

I've no time for NG Dev they screwed over GrooveMaster303 and Dred for payment when there was a back lash over their soundtrack being too Genesis sounding. They quickly dropped them and didn't pay up! You can still hear their music in the first trailer!

Oh, sorry to hear that. I didn't know that
I remember the discussion over Genesis-like soundtrack awhile back but didn't realize they never paid...

    Is this the trailer?

Sounds fine to me. Maybe the Genesis could do it, if so, so what? The Genesis has more FM channels than the Neo Geo, the Neo's advantage is that it has ADPCM and huge ROMs for samples.

"It looks like Genesis" seems to be a common complaint in the NG community, I remember people saying that about the art style in one of their other games, I think it was Gunlord.

They changed apparently to something different in the end soundwise: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMix_9cesik&t=105s

Kraut Buster looks great... but I can't help but feel like it's a waste to create a Metal Slug clone for a console that already has 6 Metal Slug games. It takes so much time and energy to create a game of that caliber, so why not make a type of game that is underrepresented on the target console?

Whenever I see a new game announced for NeoGeo I always wonder if the way to go would be to make an RPG or a stealth game for the system. Given the number of consolised MVS units, surely there's no need for a game that eats quarters all day long.

Sounding like Genesis seems more unique among the Neo Geo library than a Metal Slug clone!

Also if what matteus says is true (and I'm sure it is) then this is not a nice way to behave...

btw is Gunlord a good game?

Because then they only need a coder, a music guy, and a good artist (or perhaps a dozen good artists). Playtesting is also simpler.
For an RPG you need a writer who is hopefully competent, but is at least capable of writing half a books worth of consistent story. Designing the game and playtesting also becomes much more complex than "go to point A from B and see how it goes". Square themselves ended up making buggy as shit SNES RPGs and they were the 2nd best devs of the genre.

And I'm not sure if they'd have a means for saving the game. Is cart saving a thing on the neogeo or do you must have save carts? I don't even know if those things are common enough to make a game rely on those to be playable.

I guess you quoted the wrong comment, because I'm not the one who brought up the RPG thing.

The same as any other kind of arcade games they could have gone for, then. Then again, it's their game, so their choice...
But talking about RPGs, the graphics work could have been much lighter then. It wouldn't have been necessarily harder or more costly overall, just different, requiring different people / skills. Looking at the final result, I'm not sure the average RPG would have been more expensive to make.

The neogeo had an external memory card slot similar to the playstation. The neogeo cd had one rpg which was samurai spirits rpg, later ported to the Saturn and PlayStation if I am not mistaken. Originally Working Designs was willing to translate the game.

With a Neo Geo game a big part of the budget was often for the hand drawn pixel art, look at some of the titles like Garou or Metal Slug 3 and think how much it must have cost to get artists to draw and digitize all those frames of animation. This is why some of the earlier NG Dev games relied on pre-rendered artwork done with 3D computer models, much cheaper to produce.

I'm not the biggest RPG fan but to me the story is not really a big deal, you go on a quest, you fight the bad guys and you save the good guys, it doesn't need to be that complicated. If I wanted an in-depth story I'd just read a book.
