My guess is that Fonzie programmed the game for PC just to test things out, very common when developing for a retro console. This is why the pictures and videos have impossible color depths and translucency effects.

But I'm betting he can't get the game to run on Mega Drive hardware (maybe he's hitting sprite limits, or getting lots of lag) so his backup plan is to put an extra chip in the cart and have the whole game running on that and sending completed frames to the VDP.

That's where the Datenmeister (actually a generic processor that he's rebranding) comes in, but that's proven more complicated than he expected too. I don't think he wants to ask for help because it would be admitting that it's not really going to be a Genesis game, it's a game running on modern hardware using the Genesis for output.

At least, that's how it looks to me.

It's the last board rev by Jorge. This was pre the issues they had with it. I believe there is one or two more board revisions.

I get you but you're putting yourself in a legally precarious position wouldn't you say?

Either way I know this board is rev 2 and the manual suggests that too (it shows all board revs in an evolution process). The docs might just be a fabricated truth but either way that board rev is old

not really. But we can assume that the hardware and PCB is real and complex, things must have been and must still be worked like crazy.

I guess, if everything goes well, that everything will be finished for 30th mega drive anniversary. But probably shipped and delivered early 2019. nothing sure about it. (very) hopefully before...

So half of the best SNES games are 80386 PC games that just use the snes for output? And Virtua Racing MD is then not part of the console's library? Come on.
Lists of MD games: officially licensed (~925) @ cart sizes @ Top 5 @ Top 250 @ Sonic hacks @ best title screens @ Arcade ports (150) @ best European games

Just my speculation. But doesn't it seem odd he registered that site for Daten Semiconductor shortly after that first video showing the sprite tests? I think he knew from the beginning that what he wanted to do wasn't going to be possible on a stock MD.

It IS a stock Genesis. You just need more hardware for the end result. Just like Virtua Racing, and Megaman X2 (SNES), and Yoshi's Island (SNES), and Gyruss (NES), and Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES), and Pitfall 2 (A2600), and Stargate (A2600).

I don't know where folks think you're "cheating" or not "using a stock console" when adding chips to carts to get them to run the software as intended.

No I don't think it's cheating, nothing wrong with putting whatever chip you want into a cart. I'm saying this might be the cause of the delay, trying to get a game to run on custom hardware and making the carts much more complicated. None of the videos I have seen so far look like they are running on a Genesis.

Don't tell them but here's a leak image of the game's current stage, doesn't look like a Genesis cartridge at all.
