The thing is that, if watermelon needs funds for the next project, they are done.

I dont know how people will give them money again, even if paprium was released in the end.

There were a lot of bad decisions along the eight years of development, and from a customer trust point of view, there is no way back

I haven't read much of the thread recently, but I just wanted to say that I'm surprised that Paprium is actually released. Fonzie's lack of contact really had convinced me that it would never happen.

Also surprised to see that the game does closely resemble the screenshots that people used to argue about whether or not it was real gameplay, or if it had too many colors, etc.

Gameplay looks solid, and a lot of great aspects, like the detailed graphics, the custom music etc.

However, the game never did quite pull me in, by its graphics and colors. It has that drab color scheme, like a lot of dark green and blue tones etc.

So unfortunately, I still don't want to buy a copy, even though I've skipped around play-through vids of Paprium. It always looks drab and dark.

Which is fine, because it's obviously a style choice, but I just can't quite get into it.

For brawlers, I'd still rather just revisit Streets of Rage 1 and 2, rather than Paprium, no offense to anyone. But Streets of Rage had nice environments and full of neon lights etc. And unmatched soundtracks!

Also Golden Axe on Sega CD is great atmosphere with the actual arcade music.

    Sorry Paprium...

However the Paprium arcade stick does look really awesome!

At that point, smash the small panel to the left side of the screen that the orb was floating in front of before. The game will ask you if you want to go up to the mid levels. From there you'll proceed to the Rooftops stage. Complete the rest of the mid level stages, save the game and Baba will be unlocked.
Many thanks! Got him on my first try. I'd rep you again but this thing won't let me.

    I'm loving this game.

there's no joy in throwing enemies since the animation is terrible, there's no joy in punching because the sfx is extremely muffled, and too many enemies means you find yourself jump kicking constantly to clear the screen.

It's nothing like SOR2, where you find yourself coming up with tactics on the fly. Paprium is extremely basic when it comes to gameplay. (which sucks because I really like the rest, like all that hidden stuff)
but the actual gameplay is just so.. empty. I don't understand how people play through this without getting bored.

I believe everyone will, sooner or later, realize the gameplay is actually quite shallow. It's all style over substance. Jump kick your way to the end boss.

Well first let me state I am a patient guy still not angry upset or even complaining (invested 8 years ago not one complaint). What I posted I actually do believe though. People are free to read my post agree or think I am out of my mind. When so many packages are a month behind the others the "maybe some are being held up by delays" goes out the window. (Las Vegas shipments I mean).

Pretty sure you can do that in golden axe, streets of rage 1 and 2 plus most beat'em ups.

Streets of Rage 2 some enemies have anti airs and the jump kicks do so little damage. The best beat em ups stand the test of time because their balanced and the gameplay requires the player to use a wide range of strategies to get through the game.

Paprium even clearly being a style over substance game is still better then most people thought it had any business being. I invested in the game knowing the hardest things to emulate in a AAA beat em up would be gameplay/strategy. The moveset alone for the playable characters is extremely limited. Thankfully there are a bunch of weapons/mounts. Anyways the potential is clearly there though for a sequel to flesh out the movesets and clean up enemy A.I.

The graphics, detail, backgrounds, insane enemy variety and sheet amount of content blows me away. Obviously the music is high quality with some legit bangers. This game is an improved moveset and A.I. away from being in the elite level of beat em ups. So considering it's their first stab at the genre pretty great job.

While I find the jump kicks very effective against bosses or when getting swarmed, it's really not the most efficient way to beat enemies when you've got them managed. I tend to find grab + 3-hit combo to be very effective, and the throws help you manage which side enemies are on. I think the standing combos are a tad too weak, but I have that complaint about a lot of brawlers. Early enemies really should be killable with just one full standing set, in my opinion. Still, the standing combo very much has its place, especially once there are a ton of enemies you have stacked on one side as they come at you.

I agree 100% with this sentiment. With just a little refinement, a sequel could be an absolute killer game. Shame I won’t be funding up front for WM, not unless their business model changes significantly with regards to communication, updates, videos and playable demos. Sadly Fonzie just can’t be trusted.

Yes, we should only believe official statements from WaterMelon, like how Air France lost imaginary devkits, or how PayPal froze the pre-order money for over 6 months (an issue which was then resolved, but then it was an issue again somehow).

To be fair, and since I experienced a shitty situation with another company since then myself, both my contact at Airfrance, Fonzie (and even myself) could have lied.

So, as I said some pages ago, and as an admin requested later, this would be a good thing to move on and use your time to do better things. Like working on your game and make it the best beat them all.

You know, time doesn't work quite like that. Just because I have two minutes to spare to write a comment doesn't mean I could spend them on my game instead. For example, it's not like I can really work on my game while taking a shit, when going somewhere, or when multitasking.

Enough with this already: everyone has always something better to do than post in obscure retrogaming forums, not just Stifu, give him a break.

Meanwhile here are the latest beat'em ups released for the system in the last 25 years, just for context:

    - 1996 X-Perts (official)
    - 1996 Water Margin
    - 199X Yang Family Warrior
    - 1999 Mortal Kombat 5
    - 2017 Coffee Crisis
    - 2020 Paprium
Lists of MD games: officially licensed (~925) @ cart sizes @ Top 5 @ Top 250 @ Sonic hacks @ best title screens @ Arcade ports (150) @ best European games

Pretty sure you haven't played many beat 'em ups. Even in those with powerful jump kicks it's far from the only useful tactic for crowd control, it's not like Paprium where you just sweep thru 8 enemies on screen with jump kick spam. SoR2's design is nothing like that and SoR1/GA tend to have fewer enemies that encourage using the whole moveset.
