Good to know. Still seems stupid to have it as a stretch goal as the Switch, I would think anyway, would be their biggest market. But sounds like people are tossing money Fonzie's way once again so.. Good luck to them!

On a scale of ripped off to inspired ..

Ripped off -------- Plagiarism --------- Tribute -------- Inspired

Definitely seems a little more to it than just inspired/tribute haha. Maybe it's different for art than writing, but if this was writing that would probably be considered close to plagiarism.

Considering the fact that this game is full of easter eggs, is it not more likely that this is just a deliberate attempt to have these examples found and publicised?

And seriously, I cannot believe that this got funded on KS! I must admit though, the DC port is very tempting, but of them all this is the version I think would be the most plagued with problems...

What I find a little galling is that for those of us 'lucky' enough to have received the original, the ones getting the newer versions will receive a more polished and balanced game. I'm not really sure that the MD version even qualifies as a game; it's a great looking and sounding experience, and enjoyable in its own way, but no real gameplay is on show.

To quote Jimmy Carr 'You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter.'

They didn't bother correct aspect ratio before tracing lmao. CPS2 is non square pixels.

Hmmmm, Well, I saw the topic on Github and couldn't see any news that I haven't seen before. Well, I mean, since I first saw Paprium years ago, I've already told a friend here on the forum that Tug looked like a different guy. Obviously this extends to other characters and NPCs, I think the vast majority here have seen this before and said nothing, and I dare say that if the deadlines had been met, a tiny portion would touch on this subject.
People are not moved for the right reasons, but for their own reasons.
In the 1990s, SNK used exaggerated "inspiration" to create several Capcom-like characters, so Capcom did the same. SNK copied an entire Burning Fight game (even the name is similar). Marvel has done this with DC their entire life and DC has responded. In these examples above some are actually copies as much as Paprium did, perhaps in Paprium's case it's more apparent because the budget is smaller or there aren't artists with as much talent.
Recently Dot Emu showed their new version for TMNT beatup and April has all the frames in homage to Mika and Chunli. Turtles In Time and SOR 2 share some similar sprites. SOR has villains very similar to Final Fight. Is this the ideal world? Well, I don't think so! But it seems to me a common practice. What I see is a little clear, some people who are upset with the delay met with some haters who do not like Mega Drive and always post on the forum to reduce any achievement, and of course there are also those who want to justify rom stealing with some absurd idea. I think if you have a problem with Watermellon, delays and any other problem, you have every reason to be angry and somehow even trigger the law. But others seem to take advantage of the situation.

Tracing will bring you an extremely bad rep in the art world. And "other doing it" argument won't save you.
The fact that aspect ratio wasn't corrected is just icing on the poopcake

Inspiration, homage, homage, parody = / = tracking.

Absolutely, but who will define what this work is?
The internet judges? I do not think so...
And when I say it's common practice, I can agree that it's not a save and it's not an argument, but I'm not trying to save anything, just saying that using old poses to create new ones doesn't seem like a barrier in this pixel art world.
Anyway the pixel art had to be done, they used the base sprite but the pixel art is new.

Yes, tracing is the mark of an amateur. I don't care who does it. If you're going to trace though at least go all the way and copy all the frames of animation, Paprium looks weird with so many key frames missing. The fact that the aspect ratio wasn't corrected suggests this is the work of someone who doesn't even play videogames, maybe the artwork was outsourced to the lowest bidder.

On the other hand making similar characters and enemies as an homage would have been fine. It's no secret Capcom based a lot of their characters on real life celebrities or examples from manga/anime. Both Streets of Rage and Final Fight are inspired by the movie Streets of Fire, as well as taking some elements from Double Dragon.

On the Paprium kickstarter FAQ, it has this...
What if I already bought the game few years ago?
Of course you don't need to pay twice. If you had ordered "years ago", please contact us on our support at WM's Magical Game Factory, we are slow to respond but we can check the issues and find a fix.
For the one that have already received their game, we might also propose some upgrade service but we can't tell much more yet! Some news soon!

ughhh, he's gonna have everybody send back their carts and pay for both shipping costs under the guise of "getting the super turbo update normally only exclusive to the Switch/Dreamcast/PS4 version! but cuz I Fonzie am so nice i'll update it for free if you send it to me!"

well they only say they "might", so for starters let's wait to know the extent of that update because ATM we don't even know if it'll be worth the hassle for current cart owners, do we ?

Yeah, I'd like to know what happens to folks that paid for and waited for the Megadrive version. Will the new game be updated? Rebalanced? Would be a shame if the very people that funded the project to begin with, were left with the worst version of the game.

I guess we'll have to see how this plays out.
