    Default Phantasy star 1

Close enough to finishing college and again getting a wage, this will recommence my genesis collecting... and I think i'm going to get it back on the rails by completing the phantasy star series... (from scratch I have none yet!)

    So my main queries are

    A. Is it worth playing
    B. Is there any English translation of this version?

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Phantasy-Star-I-...QQcmdZViewItem

and take note that I do not have a master system converter which I would have to get should I be getting the original..

Yeah, that second auction is the JAP version of PSIV. Anway, back to your original question. Er, yeah it's worth playing. It's a fantastic RPG. That said, the MegaDrive limited edition that you're talking about isn't the best way to go unless I suppose you're fluent in reading Japanese. (Which I guess you aren't, since you were inquiring about an English translation.)

If you can only read English, then you should get the original Master System version and play it through the Genesis converter. This is actually more expensive than just picking up the MegaDrive limited edition, though, given the price of the Master System original these days. (The converter itself isn't that costly.)

EDIT: Yeah, there is a translation. It's supposed to be better than the SEGA (official) translation, which most agree pretty much sucks. http://www.smspower.org/translations/phantasystar-en/

One last thing: this MegaDrive version is EXACTLY the same as the JAP Master System version. There is NO difference. At all. It's just playing on different hardware.

Thanks Gen, its a bit of a toughie, should I just fly on and go about getting 2 to 4 or start at 1? Its a tricky question since jumping through hoops to get a converter etc and the cost of it, I think I'll throw up a poll and we'll see what everyone else thinks...

You were correct on the Engrish, thanks again

Can someone say of how many PS1 for MD is limited? I heard something between 1000-2500, but so often this game is on ebay i didnt believe this.

A other question is, what is the PS Gold Cartige? Its a picture on my Mega Drive version of PS1. Is it a SG 3000 version?

Get the PBC and SMS PS. You won't have fun with the Japanese version, and it is impossible to play the translated version on your Mega Drive. The PBC is a well worth investment for much more than only Phantasy Star. The 3-D glasses for example, they are Mega Awsome!

The Power Base Converter. It plugs in the cartridge slot of your Genesis and allows you to play Master System cartridges.

The 1000 number comes from Sam Pettus, IIRC. I don't know if that was right or not, but either way it's not in very high demand.

I guess it's really up to you. I think you should ask yourself if you want to get into the Master System. If you decide it's not for you (at least yet), then pass on the Power Base Converter and Phantasy Star 1 entirely. God knows 2 and 4 are worthy enough - not so sure about 3, but everyone's opinion is different so it's worth a shot. If I were you, I'd play that translated ROM and then play 2-4 on my Genesis. Hope this helps.

I will second Zebbe's recommendation of getting the Master System Converter things and the Master System version of the game. I've not played any of the Phantasy Stars myself, however, it has been on my Mega Drive to do list for a couple of years.

Get the master system converter and then you can pick up some of the great cheap sms games that are easily avaliable whenever you like too.

That's not really a yes or no question.. anyway, start with PS1. Maybe on the GBA if it's cheaper. You can skip 2 entirely imo.

Yeah, buy the GBA-version if you can...if you wanna have all parts, you´ll be ripped off for part 4 enough, so why not buy the cheap GBA-compilation of 1, 2 and 3?
My personal recommendations would only be parts 1 and 4 anyway.
