I grew up with that game and I always hated it. The control blew compared to SFII. All it had was digitized graphics and some blood which is all it took to sell at the time.

MK should have died in the developement-phase of part 1.
I find UMK3 the best form the series, other versions suck IMO. So to me, at number 3, it began to live...

For all Mortal Kombat's failings I wouldn't go that far! There are much worse fighters on the Mega Drive (Rise of the Robots leaps to mind) and although Mortal Kombat is tosh it certainly needed to be released back in the day - if only for the scandal of the gore!Originally Posted by 108 Stars
I quite like UMK3 but all the 2D MK games are cheap to the point of aggrivation. The 3D ones can actually compete with the more respected 3D fighters, I believe, but they're still pretty unbalanced.
I agree with averything that's been said about MK. I also have'em for the sake of nostalgia basically.
But man... you gotta see everybody in front of the TV when we're competing against each other on MK1 for the Genesis (this happened in my place 1 week ago)...
It's amazing how much of an adrenaline rush it still evokes.
True, at my b-day, man, it was fun !!!

MK: Fun in it's time, but unless you are nostalgic it has no value today
MK2: Still fun today... as long as you play against a friend and not the CPU
MK3: Not worth playing due to UMK3, new characters sucked
UMK3: Unnecessary run feature, still overly cheap CPU, but it has Scorpion!!!
I bought the 32 MEGA-POWERed Genesis port of MK3 for $70 back in January 1996 and I find this slander HIGHLY offensive.
Yes, even back in the day (1995) MK3 received lukewarm responses upon release because of some of its unpopular changes (lack of ninjas and prominent MK2 characters, run, dial-a-combo, modern backgrounds/music), and also because 3D fighters were starting to gather ground with the success of Virtua Fighter 2 and the original Tekken. It still was somewhat popular though, and when it hit consoles on October 1995 it was not only one of the first real killer apps for the original Playstation early on in its life (I know it had me lusting for the PS1 and its "arcade-perfect", CD-powered MK3 port, lulz), but it sold over 1 million copies for both Genesis and SNES, and it was definitely the last Genny game to sell that much. Hell, look how at how many million sellers the Genny has overall:
Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games that have sold one million copies or more.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (6 million)
Aladdin (4 million)
Sonic the Hedgehog (4 million)
NBA Jam (1.93 million in US)
Mortal Kombat 2 (1.78 million in US)
Street Fighter II: Special Champion Edition (1.65 million)
Sonic & Knuckles (1.24 million in US)
Mortal Kombat 3 (1.02 million in US)
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (1.02 million in US)
So.........yeah, respect!
For selling so many copies, you'd think I'd see more Aladdin carts in the wild. I see far more MK2 and NBA Jams.
That's because Aladdin is IMPOSSIBLE to get bored of apparently, even though if you haven't beaten it 20 times by now you pretty much shouldn't be playing.
Don't forget - "Back to the family, a guaranteed emergency, the radical MC HP's got the melody, 1-2-3 FIIIIIIIRE!
