As an owner of an Xbox 360 myself, I always feared the Red Ring of Death. I've had my 360 since March 21,2006 and it died on Valentines day 2008. After 4 days of research and experimentation, I've come to 2 things that will keep your 360 from being a $400 door stop.
- For a Temporary cure, Take 2 - 3 towels, Remove Harddrive, Discs from tray, and AV cord. Then wrap all six sides of the xbox completely. When your done, you should have atleast 1 - 2 inches of towel on all sides of the xbox. Turn it on and let it heat up for 25:00 - 30:00 Minutes. Remove the towel(s) and the 360 should feel like a weak curling Iron that doesn't burn to the touch. let it sit for 15:00 - 25:00. It should work from anywhere from 2 days, or anywhere to 2 months. It depends on the quality of the material of the xbox and the how well its been taken care of.
How It Works : The 360 Gets so hot, It resets all the chips on the Mother Board.

- For a Temporary cure with less work, Unplug the cord from the big gray rectangular cylindar for 6 - 12 hours. it should work next time the cord is plugged in. Remove this cord each time you turn it off. if this annoys you, move it to a powerstrip with less things plugged into it
How it works : The 360 doesn't cope well with High voltage. The 360 being plugged into a place with high electrical conductivity, such as an overloaded powerstrip, could , overtime, will confuse your 360. A 360 will take time to crap out in an overloaded powerstrip, so it'll be advised to use a pretty unpopulated powerstrip.
