I dont know much about martial arts but I prefer Van Damme because I loved his kicks and overall athleticism and Segal was mostly punching and seemed a lot slower.

Van Damme is a ballerina not a martial artist. Steven Segal at least practiced something.

Well from a movie perspective I'm talking about which is more fun to watch.

That has always been something that just kills me. A really good fight, I mean a really well thought out strategic fight, is over before it starts. Segal manages to show off some of the techniques required to make that happen, but the fights are still nice and drawn out. But you're right, for movies Van Damme is more spectacular in action.

Also I think Segal's movies were more violent and I'm a bit squeamish so thats another reason I prefer Van Damme. Segal was breaking a lot more arms and legs it seems and thats a bit much for me.

When it is a group fight it's no holds barred. One of the things I don't like about Segal's portrayal is he turns Aikido into more joint and bone breaking than is usual. There should be a lot more tossing people on their heads, especially in a group fight.

My brother and I like to sit down and watch Hard to Kill just to see Steven Seagal throw his backwards girly punches and watch him run like a girly girl. Few comedies make us laugh that hard.
