It's really hard to talk to somebody who considers the N64 a system with, both, retro gameplay and graphics; and very adamantly at that. I remember this guy with whom I had a conversation not long ago and how he went on to explain how he does 'not like anything that is being put out there today"; that "they don't make games like they used to for the N64", and that 'those were the best days of gaming" in his opinion. Yup, I don't get that.
But I don't have as much of a problem with the N64 as I do with the Gamecube, which I consider utterly irrelevant in the history of gaming.
I chose Playstation over N64 mainly because of FF VII and I dont regret my choice. It would have been nice to have both consoles because I missed out on some good N64 games but not once have I said that I wish I bought N64 instead of Playstation.
Yes, that guy you were talking to was an idiot, and you were right to murder him. Grinding his body up and feeding it to his own cat may have just been adding insult to injury, however.
I disagree with you about the GameCube, though. I have quite a soft spot for that little system.
When the N64 came out I really wanted to believe in the system. I guess it was the fanboy in me. I thought "OK things don't look so great now, but the games always get more awesome as time goes by, right?" Wrong. FFVII was what swayed me to buy a playstation, then when the next two years for it were two of the best in gaming since the heyday of the SNES, I was pretty much hooked. I consider the PS1 the true successor to the NES and SNES. It had that same magic (plus Konami and Capcom).
The thing with me and the Gamecube goes way back to the final days of the Dreamcast. I didn't mind it as much that Sega had some of its franchises go the way of the Xbox, or even the PS2. But seeing a Sonic game on a Nintendo console while the Dreamcast was still alive and "somewhat" kicking just felt like an icicle rammed in my ribcage.
I've learned to cope with that fact after long years of gaming (and non-gaming), but the moment I purchased a Wii, It single-handedly made my Gamecube completely irrelevant. Not only did the Wii have backwards compatibility, but Nintendo was also re-releasing some of the same exact games on the Wii. What is up with that!?
Please, by no means take this as my advocacy for the Wii. It's more of a years-long butthurtedness brought upon by Sega itself. I actually don't even have a problem with Nintendo. Heck, I've mentioned many times before one of my favorite looking systems is the Gamecube, especially with the Game Boy Player (The only thing I run on the system). I love anything that is squared or cubed shaped.
But, sadly, no; I don't play my Gamecube at all. I never really have. I consider the GC pad the worst gaming pad in the history of mankind (primarily due to the shoulder buttons, secondarily due to the d-pad), I only own like four games for the system and I've never even played one of them. All I use my gamecube for is the GB player, which lately I don't even use because, (even I'm astounded by this), I prefer to use the Super Game Boy for earlier Game Boy titles.
One day I may just learn to appreciate the system a bit more, I hope. I know that I felt as adamantly about the N64 as you do now MrM, but after playing Ocarina of Time (which I thought was completely bug-ridden, but for an earlier title, I gave it all the benefit of the doubt it deserved), I just couldn't hate it so much anymore. And that's just it. Maybe I need more Gamecube exclussives to fill my GC void.
If you have a GameCube, check out Cubivore: Survival of the fittest, it's one of the best games on the system.
I often see people on forums like this one and others talk about how they didn't into Genesis at all until after it was dead, but they ended up loving it, and feeling like they really missed out on it at the time. Replace "Genesis" with SNES, Playstation, Saturn, Turbografx, Dreamcast, NES, whatever. But not N64. I don't think I've ever seen anybody say that about N64. I have never spoken to an N64 fan who didn't have one when it was current.
Yeah, I don't like N64 either.
You just can't handle my jawusumness responces.

I'm glad so many of you guys agree with me about the N64. There's just a HUGE sub-community here that seems to worship that system, and it makes my head hurt a little. I have some nostalgic feelings of my own about some of its games, but nothing that compare to those who had it as their first system.
And QuickScifi: maybe you should just watch the Game Sack GameCube episode a few more times, huh?
I'm not sure why I like the GC so much. Probably because it's something of an underdog. I have several dozen of its games, and I only play them on the Wii (although I still have a Cube hooked up to another TV in the house). I love the controller, particularly the WaveBird. And now that I'm starting to find Cubes for $5 at Goodwill, I'll probably continue to collect all the color variants.
As a somewhat-related aside to all this N64 & GameCube talk, I should mention that I owned the Playstation BITD rather than the 64, and I'm not sentimental about that machine at all. Is it because it was rendered obsolete by the PS2 so much more completely than the GameCube was by the Wii? (Nintendo eventually took away backwards compatibility; Sony did not). Or maybe I just have a strong distaste for that console generation in general? Who cares, anyway?
The N64 was great, and I was definitely excited to own one when it was peaking, but it has very little replay power IMHO. Whenever I pop in Mario64 or even Ocarina of Time (yes, even OoT), the blocky, primitive 3D graphics make me want to play SNES or Genesis instead.
I don't know, man. The GC just never struck me as "underdog" stat. For every ounce of underdogness the GC has, the Dreamcast has one metric ton of it. If I were to place the 6th gen systems in order of how much they mean to me, it would be something like:
Dreamcast >>>>>>>>> Xbox = Playstation 2 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Game Cube
But if you really want to get me into the GC, all you have to do is name me some awesome exclusive games (and the more of them that sound like party games, Mario games in general, Kart Racers, any such mainstream multiplayer mayhem or shovelware, ***Cough*Cubivore*Cough****, the less I'll be prone to starting it up).
