There are 10 kinds of people: those who can count in binary and those who can't.

I just had a rather nasty experience; nearly fucked up my Windows 7 partition trying to install some game I brought yesterday. I picked up the thing not knowing anything about it, popped the disc in and installed it as I usually do. Go to run the game, and get prompted to install some driver. OK, so I did it. Then I was asked to reboot my machine. Did that.

Turn it back on, and Windows Startup Recovery popups saying something has gone wrong. Que 20 mins of me panicking like a little girl (I have 2tb of movies, tv shows and games on here) before I'm told I need to reboot again - deep breath, fingers crossed and still panicking, but alas, it boots up fine. Quick Google search later, and I find the culprit - the UK copy of the game (Dreamfall) has a rather nasty copy-protection program called Starforce that WILL screw-up your Vista or Win 7 install; I was saved purely because I had System Restore on.

Yeah, so ain't going through THAT again. Every game I buy now, I'm checking up on. That was too much of a close call. As for Dreamfall, I'll try running it under Wine in Ubuntu, if it doesn' work, then it doesn't work. No way am I risking it on Windows again.

The moment I read "I had to install some driver" I immediately said to myself.. sounds like a Starforce problem coming up.

Once again I urge people to do the following :

    1. Make backups of all your shit, HDD's aren't that expensive anymore, even when you have 2tb drives.

    2. I use Acronis for Windows backups, its very handy and has proven useful quite a bit of times.
(you just make a full image of the drive and can then restore it wherever whenever you want.)

That was what I want to do, but I'm strapped for cash at the mo', but it is at the top of my list of stuff to do/get. That and back-up my files on DVDs as an extra safety net.

Dude, I keep all of my precious files off of the OS partition just in case something like this happens. Even if Windows was destroyed though, your files would still be accessible with a boot disk or through various other means. Just don't format and reinstall Windows until you files are transferred to something else. Also, back everything up now, I recommend Syncback and a second 2TB hard drive.
