I somehow had a million pairs of those Sony headphones years ago, they were pretty good.

Not sure why I had a Walkman close to the 2000s but still

They were pretty bad with batteries also. Plus my friends would always tap mine to make it skip. Jerks!

Quick question. I still have the original 80GB HDD in my PS3. It seems to run fine.

This year it's already 10 years old. Should I change it? How is that done and can I keep everything?

I would keep it as is and get a new PS3 slim on the side.

    Why would I do that?

Maybe I wasn't clear. I meant change the HDD, not the PS3.

I'm way too cheap to get a second of the same thing.

I know that feel, I've been meaning to clone my PS3 HDD for months now (after my previous one died and I had to redownload everything)
So my plan is to use one of those USB toasters with a clone function and clone my PS3 HDD to a different one. (same size of course)

Been meaning to do it for ages, Damn procrastination.

I don't think that would work because the file system will get confused if you clone an 80GB disk to a 500GB one. Also you can do that with almost any computer loaded with clonezilla.

It appears it's possible to backup to an external FAT32 formatted hard drive, pop in a new HDD for the 80GB, and restore everything to the new drive.

Yes that's possible, that's how I did my first HDD replacement.

Yeah I used a external hard drive (I don't think it was FAT32) when I upgraded from an OEM 80GB to a 320GB Samsung Spinpoint six years ago. Edit: It felt like it took twelve plus hours to do this. Edit2: Than had to redo all the settings and personalizations but after that everything was just as it always was only with larger capacity.

Yeah it takes ages to do a backup, that's why I hardly use that option.

Then a year ago I decided I really should, but when I did it the PS3 HDD apparently had already turned bad so I still lost everything.
chugged another 500gb in there and in the course of 3 days I just inserted all games I had to get the updates.

Seriously Sony you couldn't have allowed us to have a list of games that we own in our console? why did it take until the PS4 where it remembers the games that I have?
(unless you run out of space and have to delete a game, then it fucking forgets again.)

Ugh, I worry for the future of consoles when its going to be impossible to get these updates.

(unless pirates have been gathering the updates, though I guess they just make isos of the patched game dirs and call it stuff like Splatterhouse v2.30db)

Just my opinion. I already tried doing this with my slim 250GB model. I ended up going with the PS4's 500 GB HDD. But the whole FAT32 data transfer was a giant nightmare.

P.S.> Be prepared to get corrupted files if you attenpt to clone the system. Even transferring save files can get easily corrupted. Basically, the more memory (games) you're dealing with, the more problems you'll get.

P.S.S.> I recommended going for a new 500GB model as the price won't be that much now and it will be a lot easier and simpler. Also, you'd get to keep that OG beauty intact.

I for years have been thinking to myself "you need to backup your PS3.. again" I did one time, year or so after the 320 upgrade and wow that took sixteen hours I'm thinking but every time I think about doing a backup the data "I don't want my PS3 powered on for a day" and now I think it's just to old to needlessly stress out the damn thing. Edit: Hell I try not even use the Blu-ray to watch movies anymore that's why I put a Blu-ray burner in the new computer, always had an HDMI cable running to the home theater even with the old computer but now can watch my Blu-rays.

I don't worry anymore I have moved on to the PC master race (ha-ha.. master race was meant to be funny) after everything I saw and went through with the PS3 (Edit2: which is very much just like a PC only not as easy to do somethings as hard drive data backups) than the pay to use PS4 online.

Damn, this is why I asked. Why did they have to use FAT32?

The thing is the 80GB HDD is on the way out, it's just too old. So either way, the old PS3 is getting a new HDD.

Also, part of the reason is that I want to keep all my old PS2 saves which the slim won't play.

Keeping old PS2 saves should be easy. Again, though, be prepared to have at least one save file corrupted the more of these games you have.

As for getting a new HDD, the easiest way to go would be to just format it new from scratch. Then add your save files from a USB backup. I actually ended up doing that.

Do you have a lot of games on the system?
