I want to say it’s often less the reviewer and more the reader that has the problem. If I see a score of 65/100, I assume that this is a legitimately good game handicapped by some more design choices. And the reviewer often says outright that “this is a really fun game but the camera sucks,” or something like that. But the reader skips right to the score and interprets it as, “This game has no redeemable qualities.”
Sonic 2 a 65, though? That’s horseshit.
I’m going to go a step further and start bringing context into it. Take Mario 64, for example. At the time, it was certainly deserving of a 10/10 score. However... if that game was transported into 2018, given new visuals and nothing more (camera, controls, and overall design stay the same, in other words), it would be a 70-80/100 game.
Still a great game. It’s fun and engaging. But the controls and camera keep it from being perfect, IMO.
But boy would people be pissed if a reviewer did that.
