My point was Thief didn't get why people would by a PS1 when SEGA had a rich game history and that's why I used the Atari comparison. Atari 2600 is a legendary system and Atari had success in Arcades before that. The reason was simple. NES and PS1 were marketed well and offered new experiences of games the competition did not. NES got the biggest franchises and so did PS1,the most mainstream appeal.

Theres also the N64 and how Nintendo thought they were unstoppable, so they went with cartridges for their own benefit and thought people would still get the console regardless.

Yeah outside of Rare and Nintendo 1st party there was not a lot N64 offered. There was some but not much. That carried them to 33 million systems but compared to PS1's 102 million it ate dust. Even the 3rd party games N64 did have that were also on PS1, PS1 was often better as they loved to put in CGI FMVs that the N64 was unable to display. N64 was a solid system overall but IMO the worst of the 3 htat gen for game variety. N64 might be the worst home console for RPGs ever. Like seriously what RPGs did it have? Quest 64 and? Even Wii U had more and good ones to boot.

Yup totally forgot about that despite the fact I own it and loved it. Paper Mario. Still that's slim pickings.

Depending on your definition of “RPG,” there’s also Ogre Battle 64 and StarCraft 64.

But yeah... the N64 is pretty much starved of RPGs, particularly considering how many there were on the NES, GameBoy, and SNES.

    Lots of racing games, though.

So what is a list of the RPGs on the N64 (and RPG like games, obviously, since there are not that many)?

Lol that might be all of them listed in the last few posts. N64 was pretty pathetic for the genre. Disclaimer I do not hate the system.I like it but as anyone knows the system really lacked variety in its library.

Alright, this list will probably need some pruning, but here's a list of game titles that might be RPG-like.

I'm really just going off the titles, though. Don't we have a resident N64 fanatic? WarmSignal, is it?

    Aidyn Chronicles: The First Mage
    Command & Conquer
    Harvest Moon 64
Mace: The Dark Age (it's by Midway, no way it's RPG-like... but that title!)
Ogre Battle 64 (this is like FFT, right?)
    Paper Mario
    Quest 64
    Shadowgate 64 (...maybe??)

No. Mace is a fighting game.

Yeah, figured that was a stretch, but “Dark Age” threw me off.

Does anyone know anything about that Aidyn Chronicles? That’s an RPG title if I ever heard one.

Edit: Googled it. It’s an RPG, and doesn’t look like anyone like it.

It's just a terrible game. I don't remember a whole lot other than reviews were scathing. I kinda want to buy it just to see a WRPG attempt on N64. Can't be worse than Virtual Hydlide.

So... Ogre Battle is sounding like the closest thing then.

Also, if we are going to include RPG'ish titles, let's add the two Zeldas. Not that I have ever considered the Zelda games RPGs, with the exception of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. But I am trying to get an idea of how the N64 can provide at least somewhat of a similar experience. Those other titles seam to do the trick, though; Mace not included
