So I was sitting on the couch a bit ago watching a television program when I noticed my teenage daughter was using her phone to take a picture of her face. This is far from a unique occurrence, but for whatever reason I noticed it this time and started thinking about it. We were just sitting on the couch not doing anything, and then I heard the click.
She likes to go on some phone internet app thing where she looks at pictures of other kids' faces. And then I assume the kids click a like button and/or comment about the face pictures. And the thing is, all of the kids seem to be into this. And I imagine lots of adults as well. I mean, I recall being on a plane a few months back and the lady next to me was taking pictures of her face and then doing something similar with the phone apps.
I'm not sure where I'm going with this exactly, just making an observation about what seems to be a popular phenomenon in modern American society. I guess I just dont understand it. I can see the face picture when you're out doing something, but it's just strange to me that so many people just take face pictures seemingly at random while sitting around. I dont know. Do any of you fellas take pictures of your face?
NEVER.
And for the record Prof: I mean no disrespect, but I totally LOL’d at you describing a ‘selfie’ as a ‘face picture.’
Unless you're 20,000 years old the concept of a selfie isn't exactly a recent trend.
I'm willing to bet many of these were taken with the Brownie which was one of the first consumer camera's and it cost $1.
If we go back further people had portraits (paintings) made of themselves. A painted selfie if you will. Even further and those in power had statues made of them. We change how we do it but the need for it is by no means new. Sure not everyone is into it. I don't do it. Just while I admit seeing people take selfies is kinda annoying. It's really not a "you kids!" thing either.
I think the intent has definitely changed, even if the process is literally as old as the camera itself.
What makes me cringe is when girls pull that ridiculously pouty 'duck face' as they take a selfie. My sister and niece pull that expression and I laugh every time.
I work in research at a hospital and occasionally we get interns from the local all girls private high school.
You have just located the tip of the iceberg. It's insanity. Between finstas, rinstas, and snapchat, teenage girls in the late 2010s have finally lost their minds.
Also, they make fun of me for pronouncing vlog "v-log." How the hell was I supposed to know it's one word now.
