As terrible as that moment was, it's still not worse than appearing as a country that can't even figure out who the hell they elected for President.
The only time I was ever nice to Bush was in 2004 when I congratulated him on his *first* actual election to office. I can remember back in 99-2000 when I saw him for the first time...I remember thinking "I hope they don't vote that moron into office".
