    Default Adventure games on consoles

Why did adventure games fail on consoles?

I notice there were a couple of adventure games that were on consoles like:

    Maniac Mansion on the NES
    Kings Quest on the SMS
    Snatcher on the SegaCD

But the genre never really did well on consoles and died out all together in the late 90's as they failed in the home computer market as well.

I am not sure what the definition of Adventure game is, but wouldnt like Zelda be a adventure game or any other Action RPGs. What about something like Sonic Adventure or Starfox adventures(Terrible game).

You can take a look at what Wiki says about the Adventure genre, Wiki classes Zelda as a hybrid Action-adventure

I wouldn't classify Snatcher as a failure. It was released in small numbers at the very tail end of the console's lifespan. Just because it exists now in small numbers doesn't mean it was a failure. How about Rise of the Dragon or Road Avenger? Those were early titles on the platform and given the installed base available at the time they did pretty well.

    Other non-failures:
Sega CD: Secret of Monkey Island, Mansion of Hidden Souls, Willy Beamish
    Saturn: Lunacy, D, Myst, Riven
    PS1: Alone in the Dark

I'd say that adventure games haven't been the most popular KIND of game over the history of console gaming, but I don't think I'd say adventure games as a whole have failed on consoles.

Adventure games have a small, but dedicated fanbase. Unlike the millions of hordes who only wish to follow the waves of FPS and MMORPG etc.

I'd go as far as to say adventure games are my favourites, generally speaking. I love my point and click titles, visual novels/text based titles, puzzle adventure titles, free roaming titles. All very good stuff.

And uh, the adventure genre on consoles is pretty popular, actually. Ace Attorney? Broken Sword? The genre is far from dead, as far I am concerned.

Kings Quest V was on NES too. I loved Maniac Mansion on NES with the battery backup (no damn long codes!) and Scooby Doo is pretty neat on the MD reminds me of DoTT and other Lucas SCUMM games.

Syberia for Xbox was great. Zack & Wiki is one of my favorite Wii games. And Hotel Dusk is one of my favorite DS games. The genre is still very alive on consoles, although it's not huge or anything.

I hear rumblings that the new Sam & Max games will be ported to Wii. That would be awesome.

Sam and Max lol. I have the original on CD somewhere but I haven't seen the new ones.
