Is it possible to do? If so, how can it be done? Is it worth it/how much does it cost?

It is possible. it is very worth it, but remember that if you have a 32X this will not work with it since the 32X has it's own video to deal with.

The Old School Gamer does it, but you will have to ship to Canada.

At the time I wrote this article for the site (which will show you some rough examples), his prices started at around $65 for s-video upgrades (that doesn't include shipping).

I was thinking of getting an altogether new model 1 to get converted, I play the 32X on a Genny II so no big deal...

I want to do this to my genesis, but I want to make a breakout box so it will work with the 32X as well, but I haven't found a decent schematic. If someone knows how to do it and would like to either post some info or pm me directly, that would be great.

EDIT: Oh, I forgot, I want to do this to a model 2 genesis... and now that I think about it, you need to run wires directly off the chip, don't you? So making a breakout box wouldn't work anyways... Anyone know how to split composite sync into h/v sync so I can go VGA?

there's need for S-video mod for 32X if you want to use that too... I have no 32X yet so I can't say if its possible or not. Its easy to add extra S-vid out connector to MD... but its MD pic only, no 32X stuff on it.

I'd like to do the mod so that you can't tell from the outside, I don't want some frankenstein genesis with a million ports and plugs.

you can always alter the pin out of the existing outputs like I have done.... this makes your system incompatible with all cables there are.

I'd still like an external "box" that does a conversion from RGB to S-video (and that is easy to do and cheap).

It'd cost him well over $65 just to ship his Genesis to your corner of the world and back.

Canadapost is a huge rip off through and would inflate the overal cost with return shipping.

The XMD3 works great, can be used on a 32X and if you get the SMS/Model 1 Genesis version, you can play it on Genesis 2/32X systems with one of the 32X's adaptor cables.

Unless you just want to buy an XMD3 which comes pre-assembled.
