I like your article, but why cant you buy a receiver like this one

have your genesis/32x go into it with composite and out of S-video or component to your TV, and then Sega Cd can connect RCA for the stereo sound...

That'd be the equivalent of passing your Genesis composite through one of these-

There are pricey devices out there that will boost the signal from old rotten connections, but that doesn't even compare to a real S-Video/Component mod or RGB.

Exactly. The source is still composite. That's like taking 2 crayons of different colors, melting them together into one big crayon, then chopping that crayon into two pieces and wondering why you don't get two distinctly different colors like you did before they were melted together.

Also not too many receivers allow composite-sourced video to go out the s-video outputs anyway. They'd need a Y/C separator built in and those aren't cheap... and the quality is still that of composite.

A bit late to the party I suppose, but I just recently got me one of these xmd-3 devices, and I gotta say that the difference in picture clarity is just crazy!
It's like experiencing all those great genesis games for the very first time.
I took a couple pics of a sega cd game (Flashback), and the increase in visual detail from the first pic(via composite) to the photo below that, is just awesome.

Garbage in, garbage out. You can't pull any more detail out of a signal that isn't there to begin with.

am I the only one that thinks S-Video on anything older than Dreamcast looks like shit? Look at that second picture, what, is it Lego Flashback? Composite is the way these games were designed and meant to be played in, anything sharper is like seeing a hot girl with mild acne and zooming in on the acne.

Just got my stereo AV cables for my Genny2, and I'm happy with those. I'm not so much of a tech head as to do s-video. More power to you if you want to do it, I just see it as unnecessary. Neat learning experience, though.

With today's newer digital TV's coming out something will have to be done.

17dyasolder, I agree that particular picture looks better a bit blurred.

Then why are RGB jacks provided on the system itself? S-video, etc looks bad on anything but an SDTV CRT, but on that type of TV it looks godly.

Like I said elsewhere, I'd rather have this:

    than this:

Joe, is that s-video on a CRT TV compared to composite?

Actually component, but s-video gives impressive results as well.

the pictures show the screen close up. So yes it looks more lego like.

But its only an issue if you sit 2 inches from the screen.

If you sit in a normal position the extra clarity is well worth it, it doesn't look as blocky.

Look at the first flashback image from 5 feet from the monitor then look at the s-video one, then it all, literally becomes clear.

I am lucky enough to have scart here and going from rf to scart instantly convinces you that you cannot go back to playing via rf.

A bit like the 50/60hz, 50Hz on sonic is torture when you have played it in 60Hz

While it is new system I bought component cables just for Metal Slug on my Ps2. The composite from my Ps2 actually looked worse then when I used play it on Mame with video out on my Pc. Playing through component video was a different story. I can't believe how much better it looked. All the nasty fuzz was gone. The colors looked much more vibrant.
