There wasn't a US release of Zero Wing, the Euro version plays on a US console though. And does indeed have the crazy Engrish.

Definitely pick up Hellfire, its stupid challenging, and probably my second or third favorite shmup for the system. Also I'd pick up Thunderforce III, Gaiares, and the PAL release of Zero Wing. Those are the not so expensive ones, after you get those you start getting in to the more pricey ones aka M.U.S.H.A.
