The characters don't move smoothly for me, the backgrounds tend to be similar, there are only 8 fighters, even simple things like the energy bar were just screw ups for me.

The only reason I'm so critical is because I expected good things of this game when it came through the mail box only to end up very disappointed, it just seems slow and clunky to me.

Considering King of the monsters is a hilariously crap attempt I'm going to have to therefore assume that samurai shodown is the best (haven't played it yet) even though the screen shots for this game are as mouthwatering as ff2s were and I've been decieved before......
I always thought SNK/Takara had the worst ROM memory management ever. Everything always takes up more memory when done by SNK/Takara.

By the way, was Takara a branch of SNK, or was it another company. If the latter is true, both of them sucked balls at code density.

Takara was a separate company that, between 1992-1995, had an exclusive deal with SNK to publish/develop home conversions of their Neo-Geo titles. In turn, Takara outsourced their home conversions to other, smaller development houses (Saurus, Monolith Soft, possibly others). There were some exceptions to this deal however, as Sega both published and developed the Genesis versions of "Art of Fighting" and "World Heroes" (the latter developed here in the U.S at the long-defunct "Sega Midwest") in the U.S and Asia. They also published the Genesis version of "Garou Densetsu" ("Fatal Fury") in Japan, but Takara published it here in the U.S. Sunsoft also published and developed the SNES version of "World Heroes", and Hudson Soft (which almost always got licenses for various properties i.e "Street Fighter II" and developed PC Engine ports for them in-house and publish them as well, ala Sega w/ "Ghouls 'N Ghosts", "Strider" etc.) published and developed all of the PC Engine ports of SNK fighters.

The last two SNK console ports that Takara handled were "Fatal Fury Special" and "Art of Fighting 2" (Japan-only) for the SNES, in mid-late 1994. Afterwards, console development moved to the 32-Bit consoles and SNK handled their console work themselves.

The MD isn't the best console for beat 'em ups, is it? And the SNK ones have never really done much for me.

That said, I did quite like Samurai Shodown for the MD. It doesn't seem as good since I've played the MCD version (via emulation, of course) as the CD port is better in general.

Fatal Fury Special's my favourite in the series, but I was never really a fan of FF games. (I like how wossname's hat flies off though )

Art of Fighting's a bit blah, but a better game than I initially gave it credit for. "Anybody knows nothing about this power..."

Well, the MD versions of both FF 2 and SS are both high up on my wanted-list.

Samurai Showdown seems pretty damn good to me, the only slowdown I've noticed occurs when you do a finisher on your opponent (however the hell that happens, I don't have a clue) and a stream of coins flows from their neck. Then again, it's the only SNK fighter I really dig so I probably can't speak objectively... all SS is good SS, eh wot.

Takara was doing SNK port well past 1994 games like World Heroes 2 Jet,The King of Fighters '95,Samurai Shodown 3,The King of Fighters '96 the last game they ported was Real Bout Fatal Fury Special for the game boy in 1998

Well.........at least they moved their SNK porting to the Game Boy, but after 1994 SNK definitely handled their own console ports.

In my opinion the best Neo Geo Ports for Genesis are Fatal Fury and Samurai Shodown.

So wait, you guys are saying the genesis FF, SS versions are better than Fatal fury special cd and samurai Showdown cd on mega cd? Thats kind of a bummer as I am about to get fatal fury special cd in the mail any day now. I have samurai showdown for the mega cd and I haven't played the genesis version but it seems alright, if you don't mind the load times, damn 1x speed cd rom

Have you noticed this with the Sega CD version of SS?

    From Wikipedia:

All the 16-bit Sega versions of the game (including the Sega CD version) omitted Earthquake. Both versions lack the camera zoom, and as a result the camera is zoomed-in, which gives better detail to the characters, but the fighting area is smaller. Of note is the Sega CD version, which contained a bug which caused the game to crash when the final boss was reached. Publisher JVC offered to replace glitched discs with copies of Fatal Fury Special (which they also published for the system). No "fixed" version was released.

Oh, and as far as FFS home ports go:

"Fatal Fury Battle Archives Vol.1" port>>>>Neo AES (obviously)>>>>>>PC Engine CD (w/Arcade Card) version>>>>>SNES version>>>>Sega CD version. "Samurai Shodown" was the better of the two SCD SNK ports, despite that NASTY problem I just mentioned.

So I could get the PC Engine version and that is superior to the snes version and the sega cd version? Its important that I have a better version than the snes version as I am competing with my friend's all-nintendo collection and I can't have his games showing mine up. He already has Turtles in time to my Hyperstone hiest which Im a bit salty about, I hope he doesn't discover that sunset riders is on snes.
I just received Fatal Fury special for mega cd today and only had time to play one match before I had to leave for a meeting so I didn't get that good of an impression, but it seemed really slow and choppy, but im also used to the king of fighters on dreamcast so. I'll play it more when I get off work. I hope its good, I liked samurai showdown for mega cd, but thought it definitly could have been better. Funco or whoever ported it seemed kinda lazy and the load times are murder, but I still play it from time to time.
Does the pc engine version do the zoom in effect?

FFS didn't originally have any zooming on the Neo-Geo.

And yes, the PC Engine version is better than the SNES and Sega CD versions, but be warned as it requires an "Arcade Card" add-on and both it and the game could be costly.

You will notice A LOT of missing animation frames on the Sega CD FFS. Trust me. Even moreso than the SNES version (which had decent animation compared to the Neo and PC Engine CD versions). And the voices and sounds will sound very low and grainy.
