    Default Master System controller problem...

I just got my first master system with phaser (Hang On and Safari Hunt are also "built in" to the system!, it came with Zaxxon so I need to find some 3-D glasses...anyway the D-Pad will only move objects/characters/whatever left or right. The up or down is non functional. So on a start menu or enter your name menu it doesn't work because I can't go down or up, just left right. I looked at the system, all the pins are fine. However, I noticed that the slots where the system pins connect to the controller have metal liners. Two of these liners are missing.

    diagram:
    _______
    \ o ****/
    \ **o*/
The asterisks indicate a smaller hole for the female controller port with a metal liner the "o" is where there seems to be a large hole with no metal liner. Could this be the issue with the D Pad, or is there something more serious with the system itself?

Just plug in a Genesis controller into the Master System and see if the d-pad works.

tried it, its the player one controller port, the player two port works perfect. All the soldering on the port has flaked away and it is loose. I am currently re-soldering the pins back into the mother board. However, my soldering iron is literally from 1967 (my dad bought it in college) and it is quite imprecise so I am off to Lowes to buy a new soldering iron...

By the by, I checked my progress regarding my soldering, objects will now go up and down BUT NOT LEFT TO RIGHT crazy stuff...but considering I paid so little for it, I refuse to give up...

This should help http://www.smspower.org/dev/docs/sms_schematic.gif it is the SMS schematics, the joystick port is in the lower left of the diagram.

Speaking of Master System controller issues - I recently acquired the game Alien Syndrome, but it doesn't seem to want to work properly on my Master System Converter for the Mega Drive. As soon as it starts my character runs to the left by himself, I can move up and down and fire etc, but can't move right. Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? I'm using a Mega Drive pad - do I have to use a MS pad for this game?

Mamba Tabac: Yes, that is one of the few games that requires a SMS pad to be played on the Master System Converter.
