A bit late for this, but here is my vacation haul from my stay in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. A grand total of $169 got me these:
Doom for the PlayStation, complete in its box along with several cue cards and sheets of notebook paper on which many cheats were written on them. Awesome, and this is one of my favorite ports of Doom.
Also got some replacement hardware:
VA1 Genesis 3 (the one I was working on blew its CXA1645 and I really don't want to get anywhere near that chip). I'm gonna apply the Virtua Racing/Master System converter/32X compatibility mods as well as mix in PWM audio from the 32X and possibly add a low-pass filter to mask some of the high frequencies as I find the clarity of the Genesis 3 to be a bit too high for my liking.
I will now update my guide on the different models of the Genesis with some new information about the Genesis 3.
v1.3 Sega Master System (with a Zilog Z80, this time, rather than an NEC Z80). This seconds my dual-BIOS and FM-modded v1.3 Sega Master System. Unlike my other v1.3 Master System, I will not mod this one in any way.
Some Plug & Plays:
Jakks Pacific Space Invaders Plug & Play. Most of the games on this stick are games I really don't care about, but Space Invaders is REALLY good on this thing.
Atari Flashback 3. I know it's an AtGames product, but I'll hand it to 'em: they did a MUCH better job than Atari did with the first Flashback. The video is good (albeit a bit smeared), but the games appear to be running at half the framerate, have stuttering audio and the sound pitch is a bit too high, but it's still recognizable. It still feels EXTREMELY cheap and the controllers have VERY loose and unresponsive sticks. I hate the controllers this thing comes with.
What is NOT recognizable, though, is this... wanna-be Geniclone (even saying that is being generous towards this abomination). I CAN'T BELIEVE I actually bought one of these:
AtGames Genesis Arcade Motion Dual along with a 2GB SanDisk MicroSD card. WHAT A PILE OF STEAMING SHIT THIS CONSOLE IS!!! I already knew AtGames' Geniclones were garbage, but MY GOD, it's even worse in person than on a video! Those controllers are crap for playing Genesis games, too, which leads to this question: where can I get AtGames' Genesis 6-button-shaped wireless controllers so I don't have to deal with those crappy controllers the system came with (they don't even have Y and Z buttons, for God's sake!)? Seriously, the video is quite lousy (smeared, straight edges seem jagged for some reason, anything black appears gray (the video is WAY too bright on this thing), and the video resolution is stretched, something particularly noticeable with italicized text). Some games also have minor to severe graphical glitches ranging from sprite priority errors to graphical garbage to broken backgrounds (nasty!) while some others tend to lock up (Sonic 3D Blast's Special Stages causes the console to lock up pretty badly ALL THE TIME and Nigel Mansell's World Championship Racing may throw an Address Error at times). The controllers suck (VERY oversensitive D-pad and really bad button layout) and the audio... IT'S UNBEARABLE (I think we all know this by now, but the extent of the atrocity is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY bigger than I expected)!!! Never mind the lower sound pitch, how about DOWNSAMPLED audio (sounds like 22050Hz to me), volume levels of the YM2612/YM3438's audio channels that are all over the place, many inaccuracies in the emulated audio chips, and some games playing the music at the wrong speed? Better yet, I was listening to this WITH HEADPHONES ON!! It is hands down THE most horrific experience I've ever had with ANY piece of cloned hardware. Even the worst GOAC-based Geniclones are better than this! I'm not even sure I want to keep this thing. What I may do is sit through every Genesis game I own to get capture footage for my clone console comparisons (I am REALLY not looking forward to this), then box the Genesis Arcade Motion Dual up, put it away and never use it again except to try some games I want to buy the original cartridge (I know damn well an emulator on a PC would be a lot better than this piece of software-emulated garbage, but I do plan to get a Mega EverDrive, so I might as well load my MicroSD card with some stuff). Horrible... Sega needs to revoke the Genesis license from AtGames; they have made an unforgivable pile of shit (make that MANY unforgivable piles of shit). By the looks of it, though, it seems Sega's satisfied with garbage like this, so the odds of this happening are slim to none.
