My friend is studying to become a qualified engineer. He is developing an 8-bit system together with his class mates. It is part of the education. Perhaps you can do the same thing if you seek a similar university program. I don't know if your system will have a success. You will need millions of dollar to develop and distribute it. Even more to convince the developers of those games to make games for your system. Even more to convince everybody 3D is inferior to the good ol' 2D. Good luck!

but if you can make the games
and make them 25 euro s a piece
it s worth a shot but the money that s a problem

Is it possible? Sure. There are plenty of processors available to choose from. No need to create a new processor from the ground up. There are also MCUs in which you can make interfaces with, i.e. video, sound, I/O controller, etc. There are hobbyist systems out there like this. But I doubt you'll be able to sell this since PC systems are common place, easy to access, and already run games and systems via emulators.

    i now

but i think that there are many people out there that like the games from the 80 s begin 90 s and wanted seqeuls to games that they really liked to make those games i think it s not much easier then making the new 3d games and there are a lot of programmers that make those games easy if they want
    but where to find them

You can't just make those games and sell them. It would violate the copyright law.

beleive it or not, in my spare time I come up with tons of 2d gaming system architecture.

I'm currently thinking up the specs for a system called the DRAGONBOY SCORPION and it is going to have:

    -16 megabits of VideoRAM
-max 1024 onscreen sprites any size from 16x16 to 512x512
-max 256 16x16 tiles or sprites per scanline
    -resolution of 336x224
    -65536 colors
    -max 4096 onscreen colors
    -transparency
-sprite scaling and rotation support chip
    -graphics decompression support chip
    -a 16/32-bit CPU with a 32-bit ALU, 32 32-bit internal registers with a 16-bit instruction set running on a 16-bit bus at 14.32 Mhz, with a very small cycles-per-instruction

for a sound chip I can't make up my mind. Anyone know what kind of sound chip I can use that would make really good interesting and beautiful synth sounds. I really hate orchestra music just so you know.

If I were to make my system I would be glad to make tons of really cool games on it. I have tons of creative and fun gameplay ideas for platformers and action games.

Why not go wavetable synth? Something that supports XM or IT specs. Did you the PS1 audio chip is basically the SNES audio chip with more channels and more ram (and a higher kHz peak frequency)? Doing that in emulation via a small MCU or ARM or MIPS would be pretty easy. One of the new MIPS core and two 16bit DACs (for stereo output).

The graphics setup is where you're going to have problems. An FPGA solution is probably what you're going to need.

are you talking about Microcontrollers? If so, thankyou for reminding me of microcontrollers; I completely forgot about them. You don't hear about them as often as you should.

on paper its all nice and simple.... making the I/O chip and finding/designing a GPU will be quite some headache.

And for sound, I'd go for a wavetable and a FM synth.

wow, I must've been really tired last night. Some how I miss took this as a "give me some specs for a new 2d system" thread. Man did I must've been tired.

Sorry I can't be much of a help because it would take me forever comming up with diagrams of transisters and stuff. As you already know there are a gazillion little transisters in every chip; that would take long to design.

The best thing is to use chips that are already avalable, such as existing sound chips, CPUs ect. and use microcontrollers for more specific jobs such as GPUs and I/O chips

Hey guys, I just found out about a new kind of synth called Waveshaping (not to be confused with wavetable) where you take some wave (such as an fm wave) and chop off the tops and bottoms of the wave at varying amounts.
