Yea I really don't get the point either or how the ideas that make up next gen will be any different than any other generation before it. Of course people love buying the same re-packaged crap, thats why EA still sells 600 million copies of Madden EVERY YEAR. Its the same game with updated rosters and crappy features you wished they would have not put in with ever so slightly improved graphics.

I know, how detailed can you make a flat green feild with white lines be?

Well I guess it all in the eye of the beholder. I remember the Dreamcast blew me away when it was new as did the jump from 2d to 3d. Great looking games on a previous system do have a nasty habit of making early efferts on a new system look no better.
yes, when the jump from 2d to 3d came, I hated how that primitive 3d looked like, and that primitive 3d look didn't go away until the XBOX360 came out.

I always liked how the graphics on 2d games looked like, with their brightly colored pixel-art. I loved it back then, and I never once thought they looked a bit ugly. Add to that, I also liked them because they were fun to play. Then 3d came with it's "enhanced graphics" crap, and all the things that made video games special to me was all gone.

With all the Nintendo Wii gimmick inovation, it feels like Nintendo is trying to do something it forgot how to do more than a decade ago, but failing to do so.

I think the PS4 and Xbox 720 will probably have a similar formula to the Wii. We have passed the point of diminishing returns in terms of graphics; that's why 360 and PS3 had to be extra expensive to provide next-gen graphics, when last time around, DC and GC were state-of-the-art systems for $200 at launch. To provide the same leap in graphics again, the next systems would have to be even more expensive than 360/PS3 were. So I predict that next-gen, none of the three will be focused on cutting-edge, next-gen graphics. They'll focus on other things. We might see something of a convergence with three systems that are fairly similar to each other. IMO.

I hate this stupid formal obsessive compulsive way videogame consoles are marketed:

-every five years every competitor makes a new console
-every console has to have all games in 3d
-every console has to have the latest graphics
-every new system has to be $100 dollars more than last gen's initial release

why can't they make a system that only has what is needed to make fun games, release it anytime they want to, and focus on making their games as fun and exciting as possible?

I'm going to be making videogames when I grow up, and I am going to break EVERY RULE there is in game design.

Those rules aren't exactly true though.

Wii doesn't have the latest graphics, far from it.

Every system is not more expensive than every generation before it, especially when inflation is taken into account.

Consoles aren't always released every five years, and they certainly aren't all released at the exact same time as their competitors, or are discontinued after 5 years exactly. New consoles are needed to keep the games market alive, if the same old consoles were around for 10-15 years without any replacements then people would get bored.

There are 2D games out there, you just have to look out for them harder, and consider the handhelds as consoles.

The only reason to look forward to next gen is to see how rediculously stupid it is.
Your arguement is a bit wierd really. You say the next generation wont be any different at all, yet also say the xbox, cube and PS2 have rubbish graphics and the 360 and PS3 are vastly superior. I don't think theres a massive difference between the current consoles and the previous ones, but if you do then you'll probably notice a massive difference with the next consoles too.

While its true that new consoles don't always impress when they first come out, what does that matter?, you don't have to buy them on release. Theres thousands of cool old games you can get for next to nothing to keep you busy playing, just wait a year or two and the new consoles become cheaper and have games worth buying.

Technological advances make this happen otherwise PC's would render consoles obsolete.

Viewtiful Joe (Redifer), Metal Slug, Street Fighter Alpha and I'm sure somebody who is more up to date with consoles than I can further add to that list.

There is this wonderful economic problem known as inflation. Besides, the cost hasn't fluctated that much.

With the possible exception of EA, how many companies sit down and say "I know, lets make our next game release really, really, really tosh just to piss of all our customers"?

Non-conformity is conformity. Go for injecting something new and original (I was going to say innovative, but I can't spell it) into the gaming market.

The simple fact is there were crap games then and there are crap games now.

all of them except for Nintendo, Sega, Konami, Capcom, SNK and Treasure. All the rest just make games just so they have enough money to buy the groceries. Very few companies actually think "I'm making fun video games because I love making fun video games and I love making gamers happy."

They are all businesses, Sega certainly aren't the same 'make the game as great as possible no matter what' company they were before dreamcast was cancelled. Sonics console games are a great example of the fact they will release unpolished titles just to cash in on them.
Nintendo aren't some wonderful dream factory who only care about gamers hapiness either, the Wii is expensive for the parts that make it up, and they are guilty of focusing on franchise updates too.
Capcom shut down their most innovative studio - Clover, who made Viewtiful Joe and Okami.
SNK haven't released anything really new in a good while and are mainly cashing in on their back catalogue via collections and virtual console.

Basically games are getting very expensive to make, which means its harder to take risks and easier to make a game with proven gameplay thats been done before. Take Shenmue, it was the most expensive game ever developed until GTA4, it was impressive but the gameplay wasn't for everyone so it lost sega a big pile of cash.

Its not really the game designers that choose when to release a game, but the people in charge of the companys bank balance that decide when a game comes out, if its finished or not.
You can't really blame the likes of EA for releasing bland games when people buy them in millions, whereas innovative games often sell poorly. People in general like familiarity rather than the unusual, EA are just giving people what they want!

Both Nintendo and Sega has been in the business for a long long time, so it's only natural that they're running out of ideas.

Well if those companies had only the same very old staff working for them now since the beginning you would have a point, but they don't

A lot of the best staff have left Sega, and with Sammy in charge of the purse strings, innovation and development time have taken a big hit. Sega had to be bought out because Dreamcast was full of great games and new ideas, but people didn't want that, they wanted another version of the console they already had - Playstation. Sega are making more money selling crappy games as a third party than they did selling quality games on their own console.

Nintendo have a lot of franchises so its inevitible that they appear more than new ideas. But Nintendo are very careful with money, they don't have many game development studios working for them, and they could do with some as third party stuff on wii typically being crap. They don't bother giving cash bonuses to see games on their consoles either, hence why GTA 3 and its sequels never appeared on gamecube but did on xbox.

I think there needs to be another video game crash, so people can quit their bitching.
The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...

Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

In all actually, I have been hoping for a second videogame crash lately. I'm a tiny bit emo, so I'm like that.

    Any signs of that approaching?
