    Hmm.

I wonder if the extra horizontal overscan bothers the LCD.
Customized Sega Genesis Model 1 - VA3. Energy efficient with buck converters instead of LM7805's.

Dreamcast always runs in 640x480p60 when in VGA mode. Maybe your PC's graphics card adjusts the frame rate ? (just blind guessing)
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

On my LCD I will have to manually center the picture because of that

So I gave up on making this work, but recently I was given a somewhat older monitor. My regular monitor is widescreen, and I think that may be part of why it doesn't like the DC signal. The monitor I was given isn't widescreen, although it is LCD. So I tried the DC with this other monitor, and it... kind of works. It displays, but the picture is way to the right. Like, there's a vertical bar on the left side and the picture is cut off on the right. Why is it so off-center? And then when I tried to boot with the DC-X, I got a message (from the monitor) saying something like "unable to display this video mode". Does the DC-X do something funky video-wise?

It probably doesn't support the VGA box, not all DC games do.

If a game doesn't support the VGA box, the Dreamcast displays a message saying something like "this game does not support the AV cable". The DC-X is somehow making it so my monitor doesn't like the signal. It goes back when I boot a game, so I can still use it to play imports, but I can't use the DC-X boot menu.

I don't get it. It should be extremely simple. I just plug it in and switch it on and it works.... Maybe something with your VGA adapter ? - Could you take a photo of it ?

Remember, for some unexplained reason, the VGA signal isn't quite compatible with everything.

Well, it's compatible with everything that accepts VGA (640x480p60)
