The Master Gear whatsit? Works with non-Majesco Game Gears, if I recall correctly... but Master System games have much higher resolution than the Game Gear, and the Game Gear has a larger onscreen palette than the Master System. Putting either system's games on the other is a bad idea, and it requires some technical jiggery-pokery to play SMS games on an MS anyway.

Well, the Game Gear wants 9 volts and about 350mA. I forget the rating for the Master System's power supply, but eh, if it's 9V, it should work fine. I'm pretty sure I've used the Genesis 1 power supply to operate the Game Gear, but it's been years.

For my GG I couldn't find an official power adapter (and I didn't have a Genesis 2 yet to use, as the GG manual says you can use it) so I went to Radio Shack and was able to get an adapter that works fine for about $10.

The GG itself says it needs DC 9V 3W, so that would be what info you need to find a suitable adapter. There's a little electrical hum from what I got but that might be on an official adapter too. Plus, as a bonus, my GG hasn't fried.

I just dug out my GG and tried to play Shinobi.

Using the 2103 adaptor, never tested batteries, it seems like the thing is fried.
It gives me only a few lines of gfx across the screen, and when you turn the brightness all the way up, it turns into wavy lines, scrolling down the screen, the sound is fine though, as I can hear the game start up, and when i push buttons, it makes the SFX.

Common issue? Think it's fixable? Could I rig another lcd up to it? or at least jump a Video out connection off the board?

I just bought another lot from the same guy. Didn't know he had more. Got another Game Gear with accessoires (bag, etc) and 2 defective ones for spare parts. 30 Euros, shipping included.
