Initial impressions:
First and foremost, it's not a bullet hell shooter! It's been a while since I've played a new shooter that wasn't one and it feels nice.
The game is kinda easy on the normal difficulty. I was able to get to the last level on one credit, but I think this was done on purpose so you can unlock the Rynex-R ship from Thunder Force 4 without any trouble. Nice move Sega!
The ship you start out with (RVR-00 Phoenix) comes fully equipped with every selectable weapon at your disposal (even when you die). The only icons collected on each level when using with the RVR-00 Phoenix ship are 1UP and shield icons. This changes when you unlock the Rynex-R, then the familiar weapon icons from TF4 are litter throughout each level. Forgot to mention that the RVR-00 Phoenix collect green orbs from defeated enemies to charge up the Overdrive meter (lower left of the screen) for a devastating shot (like in TF5).
The graphics are nice and I don't think they would've looked any better if the game was developed on the PS3 or 360. The graphics are on par with Gradius V and Ikaruga but flicker like hell. The music tries to imitate the old TF games but I didn't find any of the tracks that memorable.
If your PS2 can play imports, definitely pick this one up.
