I would count Soul Blade as part of the series personally....just the name is different.
But anyway, it does not stand a chance, so it neednīt be here.
Same goes for DoA.
Tekken
Killer Instinct
Mortal Kombat
Street Fighter
Virtua Fighter

I agree with what you have to say and would gladly subscribe to your newsletter.
The only problem with VF is finding people who can play. At least everyone and their grandmothers know Ryu enough to be playable in a SF game or button mash SC, but beyond simple PPPK combos, VF just doesn't compute for those looking to pick up and play.
As much of a lifelong fan of fighting games as I am, I'm too lazy/unmotivated to get any better at them. I just finished a session of GGPO (which you guys should look up, AWESOME free service that let's you play Capcom/SNK games via emu almost flawlessly online) and I was absolutely destroyed.
1. Street Fighter (wins even though I find EX + Alpha to be ridiculous)
2. Tekken (only really have time for 3 & 5)
3. Mortal Kombat (I used to play 2 so much!)
4. Virtua Fighter (VFII on MD = blaargh, VF 32x = meh, VF4 = couldnae get into it)
5. Killer Instinct (Completed SNES version a few weeks ago - find it so blah these days)
Street Fighter 2 Series for me...
I've always much preferred Samurai Shodown 2 and Fatal Fury series...
But I'll go with Mortal Kombat as I played it the most...

He Will Rise Again (Once I've Located The Original Signatures)
Man, I loved Mortal Kombat but Killer Instinct was my game. My brother used to always play as Raiden and just do that move where he flies across the screen over and over... I could never beat him. On the other hand nobody could touch me in Killer Instinct so I put a ton of time into it as a kid.
I still have fond memories and it was probably my favorite fighter of the 90s just ahead of Mortal Kombat 2.

Hey how come no SNK fighters? Alright this will probably land me some negative Rep, but I really don't understand what everyone's problem with MK is. Was it overhyped? sure, but its still a pretty awesome game series. Its in no way better than SF2, but I do appreciate how it at least is trying to be origional and not a complete SF2 rip like a lot of games. The gameplay of MK2 through ultimate is pretty good. Not anywhere near SF alpha, but still pretty fun if you know how to play.
I think everyone who is slandering Killer Instink needs to go and fire up KI gold for n64, or better yet play the arcade version. The game is pretty badass. I love how silly the characters are. The werewolf from the first game returns with cybernetic arms (ala Jax). I mean how the hell do you fight a werewolf, let alone a werewolf with robotic arms. I was hoping they would make a sequel and have the wolf be a completely cybernetic werewolf android. The characters are all major ripoffs, theres a guy who looks exactly like the predator etc. Great stuff. I love when the anouncer says "Combo Breaker"!!!

You are lucky, Dirt Ball Gamer; negative rep is disabled!
But MK is still utter tosh!
I voted Mortal Kombat. The second game is clunky as hell and the first not even worth bothering with, but MK3 is quite fun and one of the more memorable 2D fighters of that era. SF3/Alpha aren't bad but I can't stand any of the earlier versions, something about the way they control just doesn't feel right. The Virtua Fighter games were and are excellent, I just wish it had more of a competitive scene as there's no better feeling than taking down a worthy adversary in VF. Killer Instinct was a Mortal Kombat ripoff like every other fighter of the era that people should have forgotten about years ago. Tekken has never really been my thing either, but it was steadily improving for a while (it's back to sucking these days).
As far as games not on the poll go, I'm all about the Samurai Shodown games, as well as Garou: Mark Of The Wolves and Guilty Gear, not to mention Soul Calibur. I'd love to play a version of that Soul Blade MD pirate that wasn't glitchy as hell.
Meh didn't care much for KI Gold as the 64 pad is not the best ever for fighting games. The D-pad is far too clunky and, well, using that analogue for a fighter? Don't think so. However I must admit I did enjoy the arcade version of KI more, but, I dunno, it just seemed a bit clunky to me.

Street fighter for sure then followed by: soul calibur, tekken, king of fighters and so on
I agree, using that controller was murder, which made for some intense 2 player battles. By the time we would finish my thumb was coleslaw. It turned into an endurance contest, but im cheap as fuck with kilgore, just juggle people with my uppercut etc, I think I would get well over a hundred on the combo
