Question What is the first game you remember buying?

And it counts if someone bought it for you, as long as you pointed at it and said "that's the one I want."

Mine would be for either Jungle Hunt or Centipede, both for the Atari 2600.

Jungle Hunt I got because Pitfall was sold out, and Centipede was notable because it came with a nifty little comic book that told the story of how the centipede, flea, and spider were brainwashed into becoming evil; setting the stage for how you set your former friends straight by turning them into mushrooms.

First time I remember actually picking out a game was when my grandma said she'd buy me a Game Boy game for being so good, so we went out to K-mart and I picked out Super Mario Land 2.

Man, I wish it was still that easy to get a video game :P

I received a $100 dollar check form Grandpa for the Christmas of 89. I was a dumb kid and wanted "Captain Power". My mother wisely persuaded me to buy something else that was more then just one game so I decided to buy a Nintendo. I went know defunct Lionel Playworld which was like Toys'r'us. Of course they were sold out of Nintendos. So I was wondering the through the store and low and behold there was control deck set that someone had hid. It came with Super Mario Bros. I think it was a special or something because I don't recall that set usually came with it. When I got to the register the girl at the counter freaked "Where the hell did you find that!!"

The first game I bought was Top Gun. i was obbsesed with airplanes so is one I bought. My brother bought Kid Nikki but strangely when we got home out it in turned on the Nes it turned out to be Mach Rider in a Kid Nikki case. I wish I still had that one.

Strangely enough it was Paperboy for Lynx. We had rented Paperboy for NES and I liked it a lot. I then saw the Lynx version for a good price in some store, I think it was Software Etc. I had enough allowance money to buy it. I was a little hesitant, because I wasn't sure if this little portable version could be as good as the console. Then I took it home and was pleasantly surprised to find it was actually better than the NES version. That and Klax were my two favorite games on the Lynx.

It wasn't long before it seemed like Lynx was being phased out, so I sold it to get a Game Gear. I was only willing to do this because both Klax and Paperboy were available for GG. True story!

Might and Magic III for PC, which my grandpa bought for me and my brother. I chose it because I liked the dragon on one of the screenshots on the back ^ ^

The game is still my favorite in the series. I can't remember how many hours, days, weeks I spend playing it. I think I beat it at least twice.

And Quackshot which was the first game that I paid for myself. I bought it 2nd hand at a not-so-local store for the Mega Drive I didn't have yet at that time. I went there to preorder Sonic 2. My goal was to get the two Sonics, and all three Disney games by SOJ. When I went there to take home my copy of Sonic 2, I also bought World of Illusion which just had been released.

Sonic 1 then came bundled with the Mega Drive, bug I can't remember how I got Castle of Illusion.

The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

    I honestly don't know...
The smell of scorched oil hangs in the air as a premonition of danger, while the engine gloriously shouts its war cry...

Throughout history, suspicion has always bred conflict. The real conflict, though, resides in people's hearts. This conflict has just begun.

The Secret Of Monkey Island for the Amiga 500.

I held out on games and almost forced my parents to get Sega Channel instead. Damn that was a good decision but if that doesn't count, I also had someone buy Sonic 2 somewhere along the way.

If I had to guess I would probably say Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for NES. I think that was like the 2nd or 3rd game I got for the NES and its one of the few I don't remember the story behind how I got it, but I'm sure it was something like "THAT ONE!". The first game that I REALLY sought out for some period of time was Mega Man 2. My cousin had it and I was freakin relentless to get my own copy. Its understandable of course since it is the best video game ever made, ever, ever.

Did it happen to be used by chance? If so, what probably happened was that they were both 5 screw carts with flathead screws and someone rented it/bought it and swapped the ROM boards and returned it/sold it back. I heard that very same thing is the reason Nintendo switched to security bits.

No it was brand new. Very few places were selling used games back then.

is there any possibility that a kid bought it and brought it back? back then, you could still return stuff on the "no questions asked" return policy. Do you remember if it was sealed or not? That would have to be one hell of a screw up to have a Nintendo made game in an Irem game's shell. Not calling you a liar or anything, just trying to figure out if it was a factory snafu or a sneaky trick by some kid to get a new game without paying for it.

    Hmm.. that's a good question!

I'm fairly sure that the first game I got (that didn't come with the console) was Mario Kart, but I didn't pick it - it just happened my dad has good taste in presents / SNES games! The first level I played on was Koopa Beach. I was rubbish

I did want Super Mario World though, and I think it was around the same time - so I'm going to say it was that. Still two of my favourite games ever. Actually, I try not to play Mario World too much, as once I start a new game, I find it difficult to not play through the whole thing until I have 96 again...
