I've watched bits of a playthrough of the first game on YouTube and was a bit disappointed. I kept looking for that giant spider thing from the "Mad World" commercial and couldn't find it. Every enemy I saw, including the last boss fight, really didn't look impressive at all by comparison. Looks like a nice enough game. I did GameFly Gears of War 2; it's scheduled to arrive today.

The spider only shows up in a couple cutscenes, and appears in-game as an all-too-brief boss battle. I hear they are more common in 2

Got the special edition yesterday and finished the game, it...was...AWESOME!!!

I won't give anything away but the Corpser (Spider) is fairly common yes as well as far bigger enemies!

Christ, you already finished it? I'm right at Act 3, but I've been playing a lot of the multiplayer modes, as well.

I didn't care for the first thing you said

I just beat the game a little bit ago. Now for for the two harder difficulties and the rest of the achievements

Can't figure out the "meat shield" achievement. There must be a special trick for it - hsa anyone gotten it yet?

I played Gears of War 2 at my friends house yesterday with the online mode, I think it's better than the first Gears, especially the fact that while running you can turn easier and the camera angle is better.

I skipped out on the first Gears of War, I'm probably going to pick this one up.

A quick search says grab an enemy and use him as a meatshield ten times. Not sure if there is some special requirement (in the same round, only in solo, etc.), but it shouldn't be difficult to figure out.

I figured it out. You have to do it a very specific way.

By the way, has anyone completed the game yet?

Haven't much time over the week, i'm doing it on other difficulties then i'll probably hunt for those war journal collectibles.

One problem I have is unlocking the last three multiplayer characters that it requires me to have a save on gears 1 for, I do but they're still locked, but will it do it if I sign in online? I have to unplug my system and haul it downstairs to the same room as my router to sign in which is why i've not invested in a gold membership for live.

I think you need to have certain achievements from the first game (not just a save file), and I"m pretty sure the only way for it to detect that is to get online.

I believe Melf stated he completed it on co-op somewhere.

To piggyback onto your post, is there anything in the sequel that will confuse me not having played through the first game? I doubt it since it seems to be essentially just "wipe out the alien invaders," but I'd like to know before hand if possible. I see Dom is looking for some missing girl... is that an element of the first game's plot?

Barely. If you watched closely in one or two of the cutscenes, Dom mentioned that he was "looking for somebody."

I think he whipped out the picture at one point, but that subplot wasn't focused on too heavily.

The only other significant story element carried over from the first game involves Fenix's father. Marcus deviated from his mission at some point to rescue his father, and he was imprisoned for treason.

Oh, and there was a soldier named Carmine that got his head blown off by a sniper, too.

You really should just play the first game. It's just as good (if not better) than the sequel.

Gears is about testosterone overload, not thick and convoluted plots There are a couple of clever references to the first game, but there's absolutely nothing you'll miss if Gears 2 is your first.

I've finished Gears 1, and it didn't unlock the hidden characters - I think this is because I've been offline as of late. Better check tonight to see if it's unlocked now I'm connected again.

    Now, WHO WANTS TOAST?
