My elite has red-ringed twice in the last month - but 'recycling the power' seems to have sorted it out. I have also moved it so it's now horizontal, and it's been behaving ever since (touch wood).
I know the 360 is the most hateful and unreliable console to ever have graced the planet with its presence, but the draw for me is competing against my friends for gamerscore. It's kinda like the old high score charts in arcades but infinitely more convenient.
I know I'm Microsoft hater #1 but even I was considering a 360 at one point. I was even looking around to see if anyone was offering a special bundle or something and pricing everything out. Between the ripoff add ons like $100 Wi-Fi, paying for live, PITA controller batteries, weenie hard drives that cost a fortune, etc. I just figured it was more money than it was worth to actually get it where I needed it to be. If they could get the reliability anywhere near the original XBOX I think we'd be in business, but the fact is that the whole reason the new XBOX is smaller and lighter is because its missing all of what made the original XBOX a fairly reliable system (all CD/DVD based systems automatically can only be fairly reliable as there are so many possible points of failure compared to the trusty ol cartridge systems).

lol, truth, achievements are worthless unless you actually get something valuable in return for them.

    We get it, alright?
True, I think 17days and I take it a little more seriously here because we deal with these things on a daily basis. Him much more than me, I just throw a defective sticker on the thing and get it the hell away from me so I don't catch whatever it had. It irks me though because since the holidays started we've been getting red ringed 360's into my store daily, just making you go "WHEN WILL IT END???"

Of course this thread started off about someone's 360 red ringing so we're just being on topic right?

I know I come off as a Sony fanboy (I hate that term, but I bleed Sega for the record) but like 17days, I was considering getting a 360 up until last June. I looked at both of them honestly for what they offered, what I was going to actually USE out of all that each offered, and then I made my decision based on the exclusives each system had. When I did all the calculations, the 360 had absolutely nothing that truly appealed to me personally, or at least anything that the PS3 didn't do either better or free for me. Plus I'll take MGS4 over Halo 3 any day. In actuality I probably still would have bought a 360 if it wasn't for that MGS4 PS3 bundle, which kicked ass in every way at the time. Looking back, it was an awesome decision on my part.

So in essence I'm not trying to be a hater on the 360, I'm just being real about it as it pertains to me.

At first I thought the achievements went toward purchases on Xbox Live Arcade, etc. The main reason I thought this was because when I got an achievement, the screen would tell me I was awarded 100 G. G? WTF is G? I figured it must be "Gold" since I came from playing games where "G" was the basis of the monetary system. I thought that was a bad-ass idea. But nope. G ended up standing for "Gayness".

    LOL

Achievement points appeal to the same part of our brain that made us play arcade and Atari games in the early eighties purely for the high score. This is true whether you understand it or not.

Anything that involves collecting of any sort is going to be addictive - whether it is experience points, fossils & bugs, pokemon, etc.

The point of playing a game for high score is trying to beat your last score (or someone else's). You can't "beat" your last achievement -- you either got it, or you didn't.

I will never understand the appeal of achievements. I think it's one of the stupidest things ever. If you actually got something for it, it might make sense. But they're just arbitrary.

truth. I only ever cared about high score on pre-SMB games. Any game since the original Super Mario Brothers is too complex to really assess anything from the score and is more about beating the game or beating it in a certain time than just racking up points. The only reason high score mattered on Atari games and such was because there was no technical end to the game other than dying, so the only way to measure up against other players was to compare high scores since you couldn't say "I beat it." Well, technically you can play until the arcade can't count any higher and glitches, but there's like 5 people in the world that have done that, and I would rather possibly get laid every once in a while than shoot for that goal.

Some hardcore fanatics of shooters play for score, and I can see that, but I couldn't be bothered myself. I do try to beat my times in the old Sonic games, which is basically the same kind of thing.

Actually, there are other games that people play for score, too. Like Tony Hawk (the first three anyway), or Crazy Taxi.

If done well they extend the life of the game by giving you more stuff to do and aim for. I've played quite a few games for much longer than I would normally have done to try and get some crazy achievement or other.

    'Plink'.

"Congratulations for completing Bullet Witch on the hardest difficulty! Here's 1 Gayness."

    How very true.

Oh I definitely understand it. But instead of a score, I am more likely to try for an achievement or trophy just for the challenge, not the actual prize. When the Trophy pack for Burnout Paradise came out, I had a lot of fun doing things again to try and get the trophies, but I didn't give a crap if they were bronze, silver or gold trophies. Some games, like PixelJunk Monsters, have Trophies/Achievements that are way too unrealistic/difficult and make me angry at the game.

Are Bullet Witch's achievements really that bad? I have a copy of that game that was given to me for free. Played it once.

I love achievements when they're properly done. Games like Blue Dragon that have horrible distribution (like making you level grind to 99. Why?) can eat it.

Many games have trophies and achievements that actually extend the life of the game for me, and I've enjoyed many games far beyond the amount of time I would have otherwise.

Just got my email saying my Xbox 360 was repaired (yeah, right...) and is ready to be shipped back to me. I predict I'll be posting on this thread again next year (around this time) saying that my 360 has red ringed. Will this cycle never end!!!

Not really - it's just that the last achievement u get for completing the game on the hardest difficulty gives u 1 point. Surely the hardest 1 point earned ever...

Default My 360 Elite finally bit the dust. :(

My 360 Elite lasted a whole 14 months. It started having problems, when the DVD drive had multiple errors reading my game discs. I was playing a solid 2 hours tonight, when I heard a popping noise and the screen went blank. It appears that the X-Clamp has probably snapped away from the motherboard.

It looks like I'll have more gaming time with my PS3. Maybe I'll make another run through Uncharted, or put more time into LBP. Either way, I'm not too happy about the lost gametime with my 360.

My brother's 360 just red ringed 3 days ago. He only had it for 2 or 3 months. I feel really bad for him as I don't think he has the receipt for his. I'm really glad I didn't buy one back when I was considering it a few months back. I think I will just get a really good custom built computer for my next gen gaming. The earlier posts in this thread about how much money these two companies are losing made me smile. Fuck em. I never thought I would say this but I actually want nintendo to beat those fools. I hope both companies leave the vid market in disgrace. I heard PS3s are getting cheaper now, they must really be hurting.

He doesn't need to show a reciept to MS, to get it repaired. I went to MS' website, filled out the console and shipping information, and a box is heading my way.
