    Default What's this for?

This is the 4 in 1 action replay plus cart for the Sega Saturn. One of my 4 in 1 carts has this pronged thing at the top that looks like the male slot for a computer monitor (or printer).

My other Action Replay Plus 4 in 1 does NOT have this connector. What is it for? What is the difference between the cartridges?

I have always heard it was for saving codes to a computer or uploading codes from a computer.

I've never used it myself, but I'm damn glad to have an Action Replay.

There was a cable that connected to that and to a computer. You could back up your save files to the computer, and I think there was a way to transfer cheat codes through the cable (so you could download them off the internet, and then transfer them to the cart without having to enter them).

One person told me that if you have a VCD card, you could transfer MPEG files to the cartridge and play them with your Saturn.. but that's probably a bunch of crap.

You can connect a coder's cable to that and do all kinds of things, as long as you know SH2 Assembler you can think of it as a mini dev kit .

It can be used to upload small homebrew programs to your Saturn. Very useful for developers. I think that if you don't need it, you should consider selling it at ebay, so someone interested in developing for Saturn has a chance on buying it. They are nearly impossible to find these days. Every shop that claims that has them in stock, just has the version without the COMM port, but since the box itself is identical they think they got the version with the COMM port.
The Mega Drive was far inferior to the NES in terms of diffusion rate and sales in the Japanese market, though there were ardent Sega users. But in the US and Europe, we knew Sega could challenge Nintendo. We aimed at dominating those markets, hiring experienced staff for our overseas department in Japan, and revitalising Sega of America and the ailing Virgin group in Europe.

Then we set about developing killer games.

A lot, but the Action Replay is only really helpful to test small programs (read: developing). A CDR compatible Saturn (or using the swap trick) is the much better choice.

One of my personal faves is vbt's SMS emulator SMSplus:

Rockin' B hosts many cool homebrew, and some compilations from the C4 contests: http://www.rockin-b.de/c4.html

Another interesting thing might be the Game Basic Database, but I am not sure if there's a compilation yet:

Using the swap trick is not a better choice. Having a modded Saturn or a PAR All In One are the best choices and must haves for Saturn owners.

I meant for booting homebrew, not imports. I bought a Japanese Saturn modded for CDR support from Rob Webb and I am using the Action Replay only to play European and American games.

I also thought you meant that switching/swaping the st key and a ram cartridge is not recommended. I've never swapped discs before for playing homebrews or back-ups yet. I don't know how bad that will wear down your saturn and I'd much rather have my saturn modded or buy a new modded one. Thanks for the link!

The ST Key works on my Saturn, it just depends on what version you have I guess? If it doesn't register on the screen, I'd try taking it out of the cartridge slot and putting it back in again. I think having that Interact Gameshark may have ruined my contacts a bit. Now I only use the PAR 4 in One all the time and leave it in the cartridge slot. I hate the white color on the cartridge shell because it doesn't blend in with my black Saturn, but it does its job well.

Yeah, maybe that's why. All I had originally was the interact cart. Now if I even touch my 4 in 1 it doesn't register either. But I got the ST key first, right after the Interact card and it simply wouldn't work ever.

I've found if I boot the saturn with no game, I can get the Action Replay card to work...but my primary Saturn got knocked over yesterday (thanks dogs) and it's been having a rough time reading anything since. I'm going to venture out and get a new one today.
