IIRC, it was MUCH slower than AB. I remember it being decent but not much else.

I'm going to have to agree with Melf.

Decent, but nowhere near able to dethrone AB.

EGM & GamePro trashed it in their reviews of it. It was forgettable apparently.......wasn't it originally a coin-op and a sort of 3D spiritual successor to AB?

Looks like another appearance of the Jolly Rogers.

It lacked the frantic action of AB.

I did like the variety of planes though.

I kinda like the MODEL 2 arcade Sky Target but not the Saturn version.

Neither version is a 3D After Burner IMO. For that you'd have to play the much more recent After Burner Climax arcade on the Lindbergh hardware. Kickass game and I hope it comes home next year (though I doubt it will).

Even the crappy handcam video of "AB: Climax" I saw showed an awesome sense of speed.

Seeing the actual arcade game might just make me pass out from extreme levels of "fucking awesome".

I've played a demo of Sky Target at the good old Funcoland. It wasn't all that great.

I've also played AB:Climax and it is beyond beautiful. The title "Climax" isn't an understatement.

What is the difference between the Model 2 Arcade version of Sky Target and the Saturn one?

This title has been on my to buy list For at least six years... I might buy it someday.

You know how early home 3D games had a blocky textures and a tendency for polygons to deform/lose texture?

Sky Target has some of that jawusumness.

What about an afterburner-like game on the Dreamcast? What would be comparable? Something more jawsum than Sky Target?

Afterburner *is* more jawusum than Sky Target.

For something Afterburner-ish on the DC...you'll have to consult someone who knows more about the DC.

After Burner II was emulated in Shenmue on the Dreamcast, as well as in Yu Suzuki Game Works, but if you're a die-hard After Burner fan, don't get either game. The sound emulation is OUTRAGEOUSLY BAD! The music sounds completely different, and some sound effects are completely missing. It still plays like After Burner, though, but the experience will not be the same. In case you didn't know it, Sega released a compilation with After Burner II, Space Harrier and OutRun for the Saturn(the name escapes me, I only have Sega Ages After Burner II, which is the same like on that multi-game disc, but just on its own disc). The multi-game disc got a North American release, but the disc with only After Burner II was only released in Japan.

As for Sky Target, the one problem I have with that game is how often a missile hits you(which for me is ALMOST ALL THE TIME). Goodness gracious. Oh, and most of the music, at least to me, was a little... meh, so I made a rip of my Sky Target disc and replaced almost all the music by that of After Burner II.

    A little off-topic, but I thought I'd mention these:

-After Burner Climax: Holy crap! Every time I pass by my local arcade, I ALWAYS drop in some credits into its After Burner Climax machine. Fully motion-sensitive cabinet + the F-14D Super Tomcat + After Burner II's music = one hell of a thrill-ride. HOT DAMN, I'M DYING FOR A HOME PORT OF THAT GAME!
-After Burner II on the PlayStation 2: Yes, Sega re-released After Burner II on the PlayStation 2, but it ditches the Super Scaler-driven 2D graphics for true 3D. It doesn't rival After Burner Climax in any way, but it's a very well-made re-release. BUT, there's a problem: only released in Japan. You'd need a Japanese PlayStation 2 to play the game(or find some means of playing Japanese PlayStation 2 games on a North American unit).
